How to Opt Out of Receiving the Yellow Pages

first_imgA Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… 8 Best WordPress Hosting Solutions on the Market Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting john paul titlow Once registered, you’ll recieve an email with your auto-generated password, which you can then use to log into the site. From there, you can select which phone books you would like to recieve (wishful thinking on their part?) or click the grey “Opt Out of All” button in the lower left and then click “Save Changes.”After opting out, you’ll get a confirmation email listing which phones you’ll be recieving moving forward, if any. As of today, businesses and individuals can opt out of recieving paper-based phone books in the mail using a new Website called the National Yellow Pages Consumer Choice & Opt Out Site. Last month, we wrote about a study showing that nearly 70% of adults in the United States “rarely or never” use the phone book, and instead opt to use the Web-based search tools, which are infinitely more convenient and efficient. That research was conducted on behalf on WhitePages.com, who operates BanthePhoneBook.org, a site advocating opt-in-only delivery of phone books. The new opt-out site was created by Yellow Pages Association, the trade organization that represents the publishers of phone books in the United States, signaling an acknowledgement that printing and distributing paper phone books to every household is no longer a sustainable practice. To opt out of recieving the phone book on your door, head to www.yellowpagesoptout.com and register for the site. The registration process requires you to enter your address and phone number, but a note on the page promises that this information won’t be used for any purpose other than the opt out. GREEN BUILDING TIP: Use a Certified Irrigation Pro

first_imgFrom the Green PrimerWhat is Xeriscape, and why is it important? Green pointsLEED for Homes: Up to 4 points for high-efficiency irrigation systems.NGBS/ICC-700: Up to 10 points for efficient irrigation (801.7); up to 8 points for rainwater harvesting (801.8); 2 points for irrigation zoning (801.9); 4 points for smart irrigation controller-OR-15 points for no irrigation system with green landscape plan (801.10); 5 points for gray-water irrigation use (802.1). As much as 60% of all household water consumption can go to outdoor uses. Irrigation systems should be designed not to waste potable water. A good system delivers water efficiently at the right time. Systems that distribute water indiscriminately, like lawn sprinklers, are inherently wasteful. While lawn and garden work are tempting DIY projects, a certified pro can help you accomplish your water conservation goals more efficiently. At least they can help you make better choices when designing the system. The Environmental Protection Agency has a national list of irrigation professionals who have completed a certification process through the EPA’s WaterSense program.—_This GREEN BUILDING TIP is from our Strategy Generator. Britain’s Zero-Carbon Dustup

first_imgSometimes, half-measures seem more disappointing than out-and-out reversals. Take, for example, the reaction to recently released details of the British coalition government’s 2011 budget for green measures in its “Plan for Growth,” whose relaxed home-building requirements have been called a “U-turn” by green-building advocates.Under the government’s lowered standards, critics say, carbon emissions generated by homes built after 2016 would be reduced by only two-thirds of the amount required to bring them to true zero-carbon performance. That’s because the new government policy requires home builders to comply only with the UK’s Building Regulations, a national building code that covers carbon dioxide emissions from energy used for heating, fixed lighting, domestic hot water, and building services. Getting projects to full zero-carbon performance, however, would also require that they obtain their energy from carbon-neutral sources. What’s really raised the ire of British green groups, however, is the government’s decision to exclude plug loads — electricity used for televisions, computers, hair dryers, and appliances — from consideration when making the zero-carbon determination.A missed opportunity to lead on emissions reduction? As noted in a recent post by green business website Greenwise, compliance with Building Regulations (most recently updated on October 1) is a crucial but incomplete step toward honoring the greenhouse-gas-emission mandates of Britain’s Climate Change Act. Passed in November 2008, the Climate Change Act commits Britain to legally binding targets for greenhouse gas emissions, including a reduction in carbon dioxide emissions of at least 26% by 2020 (against a 1990 baseline) and a reduction by 80% of all greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.So for green-building advocates, many of whom had worked on a consensus-based plan to define zero-carbon homes, the new budget policies are zero-carbon “lite” – or “anti-green,” as Paul King, chief executive of the UK Green Building Council, put it.Last week, King complained that “in the space of two weeks, this government has gone from a firm commitment on zero-carbon homes to watered-down policy. A zero-carbon home will no longer do what it says on the tin. The world-leading commitment that new homes would not add to the carbon footprint of our housing stock from 2016 has been scrapped despite a remarkable consensus between industry and NGOs in support of it.”Incentives for renewablesThe government’s policy changes did include indications that the government will look for ways to advance the use of microgeneration technologies, however, by enhancing incentives for feed-in tariff programs and renewable-energy installations. The government says its Plan for Growth leadership will consult in May on the particulars. The coalition’s deregulation approach also played well with the Home Builders Federation, a trade association serving England and Wales. “HBF welcomes the move to set a realistic objective that is within the gift of house builders to actually deliver,” said John Slaughter, the association’s director of external affairs. “It is critical that if we are to build the homes the country desperately needs we reduce the overall regulatory burden on house building sites.”It’s too early to tell how much the government’s new policies will affect Britain’s ability to meet its Climate Change Act requirements, but the changes seems to have subverted the coalition’s promise to be the “greenest government ever,” says World Wide Fund for Nature-UK campaign manager Darren Shirley. “The government has undermined a unique example of the UK leading with a unique policy in Europe,” he said. “Zero-carbon new homes are now nothing of the sort.”last_img read more

Why All Directors Need to Take Up Acting

first_imgIndie film directors today have largely become more concerned with gear, effects, and post-production than with story and acting, which is one reason so many indie films fail to have any success. While the technical side of filmmaking is critical in today’s filmmaking environment, it is raw performance that will always be what captivates audiences most. It’s interesting to look at how many high budget blockbuster films have completely failed over the last few years, and how many small independent films have done better than ever. This summer the film ‘Boyhood’ which is an experimental drama has done exceptionally well at the box office, while huge films like “Edge of Tomorrow” are unable to break even. While there are many factors that contribute to this situation, I would suggest that the largest of them is the lack of emphasis on story, character, and most importantly performance. Not all blockbuster films are flops, and they certainly aren’t all bad. It’s interesting though to recognize that big blockbuster hits like Chris Nolan’s Batman films, had a heavy emphasis on character and performance, and ultimately those elements helped to elevate and compliment the technical and visual aspects of the film.Image from TrivialMattersYou might think that it’s only on the large scale blockbuster films where these issues occur, and where performance has become a lost art. But truthfully, I see it happening more than ever in independent film today which is likely a direct result of the easy access to equipment and knowledge. Just about anybody can pick up a camera today, learn how to set it up on YouTube and then go out and shoot something that looks half decent. But that certainly doesn’t mean their film will be strong or that the most important ingredient will have been delivered on – the performance. It goes without saying that for a film to be successful a certain level of quality must be there in terms of production value, and of course story as well. But I would argue that performance is the single most important element for any given film, and unfortunately as I mentioned above – probably the most overlooked element too. Films with flawed scripts, but great performances can still be successful – take a look at August Osage County for an example of this dynamic. That film had some problem areas in regards to the script and structure (it really was better suited for the format of a stage play), but exceptionally strong performances by the cast helped to make it an enjoyable and memorable film. On the other hand, films with fantastic scripts and poor acting are destined to be flops. It is the actors and their performances that represent the words on the page, so unfortunately no matter how good those words are, without great actors to deliver them they are going to fall flat. This may seem obvious, but unfortunately for many filmmakers today it isn’t. Most independent directors that I talk with don’t know the difference between Meisner and Method. They don’t understand what an actor needs to warm up, how they need to be spoken to on set, and what tools they use to get into character. Without these pieces of critical knowledge, it’s really impossible to communicate with an actor in the best way possible and to get the most accurate performance from them. The good news is, you don’t need to be an expert on acting to understand how actors think – you just need to take some initiative and interest in their craft.I’ve taken a number of acting classes and they have been undeniably the best assets for me as a director, and far more beneficial than anything I’ve ever learned with regards to blocking, cinematography, or screen direction. Earlier on in my career I fell into the trap at least once or twice, of focusing so heavily on the wrong aspects of my productions, and ultimately they were not up to par in my mind because of the lack of attention to performance. In the early days of cinema, a directors job was simply to direct actors. That was it. The DP shot the film, the editor edited the film, and a writer wrote the film. Today, many directors (myself included) do all of these things (and then some) because of the accessibility to technology and the shift in production from a technical perspective. This is all well and good – in fact, I personally love being very hands on with my film work and shooting/writing/editing much of it myself, but never at the expense of performance. If I ever feel that the amount of time or effort that I am putting into any given facet of the production is taking away from time that I could spend with my actors, I will have someone else fill in for me. There is a certain hierarchy in my mind to my approach on set, and at the very top of that pyramid is performance. If I can successfully direct my actors and focus on the cinematography at the same time, I may go ahead and do that. But the moment that I am focusing too much on camera and not enough on talent, it starts to show on screen. My suggestion to any aspiring directors out there, is to simply learn how to act. Take a class here or there and just understand the basics of the craft. You don’t need to be an expert, but you do need to understand the fundamental principles that drive the people that are ultimately representing your film – the actors. While everyone else is struggling to get a bit more resolution out of their cameras, or learning how to use a new piece of editing software, you will be jumping by leaps and bounds by actually focusing on directing – something that many directors no longer do.last_img read more

Snooty Congress can’t hold its regional leaders

first_imgCongress president Sonia GandhiIs is arrogance or plain shortsightedness? Call it what you may but several Congress leaders are worried if the party does not let go of its “ham-handedness” in dealing with the regional satraps, it might just have to pay a heavy price in the next general elections.Concerned partymen are talking about the need for “course correction”, which includes grooming regional leaders and giving them a free hand.Congress president Sonia Gandhi’s dependence on “apolitical” personalities for political inputs and the tendency to remain inaccessible even to state leaders is another cause for concern among a section of party leaders. As a senior AICC leader puts it: “In the Congress, a regional party leader would never aspire to become the Prime Minister. At the most, he or she hopes to be a chief minister. What is wrong with it? Why not give them respect and a free hand in the interest of the party in that particular state?””Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi and even Rajiv Gandhi could afford to slight regional leaders, when the Opposition was namesake and the BJP struggled to get a two-digit figure in the Lok Sabha. But the situation is no longer the same,” the leader adds. As a result of the Congress’s haughty approach to its regional leaders, the party has no leader of standing in crucial states such as Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Gujarat, Orissa, Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu – which together account for about 207 out of 543 seats in the Lok Sabha.advertisementThe situation is perhaps the most alarming in the election-bound UP. The party was unable to find a strong PCC chief, let alone a chief ministerial candidate to match the might of the wily Mayawati. Some leaders have suggested that the Congress project Kurmi leader and Union minister of state for steel Beni Prasad Verma as its CM candidate.”At least we could get the base votes in eastern UP,” a senior party leader said. Indeed, the Congress’s indifference to state leaders has cost the party dearly in the past. Numerous regional giants, after getting a raw deal, quit the Congress, formed their own factions and – more often than not – ate into their parent party’s vote base. The party lost its base in West Bengal to Mamata Banerjee, who after being shortchanged by the high command and statelevel leaders, quit to form the formidable Trinamool Congress. In Maharashtra, the Congress was forced to concede space to the Nationalist Congress Party – which was formed by disillusioned veterans Sharad Pawar and P.A. Sangma. In Kerala, former CM K. Karunakaran quit to form the Democratic Indira Congress (DIC) and later joined the NCP. He did, however, return to his parent party just before he died last year.In Tamil Nadu, an old hand like G.K. Moopanar was forced to quit and form the Tamil Manila Congress (TMC) after then Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao joined hands with the AIADMK. The TMC went on to considerably erode the Congress’s vote base in Tamil Nadu. The Congress seems to have learnt little from its past mistakes. In Chhattisgarh, the party continues to sideline Ajit Jogi, the only mass leader it has, leaving the field wide open to the BJP.In many other states, the party has not allowed regional leaders to grow. In states such as Andhra Pradesh where it had tall leaders such as the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy, it has failed to groom second-rung leaders.Another Congressman feels the party should let go of its ego and bring back Kadapa MP Y.S. Jaganmohan Reddy to its fold, so that Andhra Pradesh does not slip out of the party’s hands in 2014.The leader adds that only a drastic change in strategy can save the Congress from what he calls is an “impending political disaster”.For more news on India, click here. For more news on Business, click here. For more news on Movies, click here. For more news on Sports, click here.last_img read more

World Cup 2019: Pakistan minister targets MS Dhoni over Army crest on gloves

first_imgMahendra Singh Dhoni’s wicketkeeping gloves with the with regimental dagger insignia of the Indian Para Special Forces has caused a furore in the cricketing fraternity with Pakistan minister Fawad Chaudhry now slamming the former India captain for supporting the crest.Fawad Chaudhry, who is Pakistan’s Federal Minister for Science and Technology, put out a tweet on social media voicing his opinion on the matter of Dhoni’s wicketkeeping gloves and slammed the Indian media for debating on the matter.”Dhoni is in England to play cricket not to for MahaBharta , what an idiotic debate in Indian Media,a section of Indian media is so obsessed with War they should be sent to Syria, Afghanistan Or Rawanda as mercenaries,” Fawad Chaudhry tweeted. The “Balidaan Badge” or the Army insignia was spotted on MS Dhoni’s gloves during India’s opening match of the World Cup 2019 against South Africa on Wednesday as television replays showed him stumping Andile Phehlukwayo in the 40th over of the innings bowled by Yuzvendra Chahal. The pictures of Dhoni’s gloves went viral on social media within no time and fans poured in love and respect for the 37-year-old.The rules of the International Cricket Council (ICC) however, clearly state that “equipment and clothing regulations do not permit the display of messages that relate to political, religious or racial activities or causes during an international match.”The ICC as a result, asked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on Thursday to get the symbol removed from Dhoni’s gloves.advertisementClaire Furlong, ICC General Manager, Strategic Communications, said that the BCCI has been asked to get the symbol removed from Dhoni’s gloves. “We have requested the BCCI to get it removed,” she said.Balidan is a distinct insignia of the special forces, which form part of the Parachute Regiment. It has a commando dagger pointed downwards, with upward-extending wings extending from the blade and a scroll superimposed on the blade with “Balidan” inscribed in Devanagari. Only Paramilitary Commandos are allowed to wear the Balidan Badge.Dhoni, who has been conferred an honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Parachute Regiment in 2011, had also undergone training under the Para Brigade in 2015.Also Read | No more balidan for Dhoni: ICC objects to Army insignia on his glovesAlso Read | World Cup 2019: MS Dhoni sports Balidaan Badge, insignia of Indian Para Special Forceslast_img read more
