Opposition online journalist assaulted

first_img Help by sharing this information Reporters Without Borders strongly condemned an assault on independent journalist Aleksey Volosevich, which it said added to “an already shocking situation”.The journalist and correspondent for pro-opposition online news site Fergana.ru, was beaten, daubed with paint and insulted by a gang of five men on 9 November 2005.“Intimidation has become common currency in Uzbekistan and brutality against independent journalists has escalated since the events in Andijan”, the worldwide press freedom organisation.“This latest incident is a perfect example and shows that the Uzbek authorities are ready to do anything to silence those who want to reveal the truth about the 13 May 2005 uprising,” it added.Volosevich received an anonymous telephone call on 9 November from someone who asked to meet him to give him some interesting information about the events in Andijan. As the journalist left his apartment to go to the meeting, five men pounced on him, threw him to the ground, beat him and then covered him in black, red and green paint. One of them shouted “You won’t betray your mother country again!”The five assailants also daubed anti-Semitic insults in the corridor leading to the journalist’s apartment. Among them were, “Here lives the corrupt journalist” and “The Jew who knows nothing about Islam”.Volosevich is one of the rare journalists who stayed in Andijan throughout the bloody events of 13 May. He was targeted in an article in the weekly Mokhiyat on 3 June in which he was portrayed as a hooligan. The journalist was convinced that the assault was linked to his coverage, carried by Fergana.ru, describing killings of civilians by Uzbek armed forces. He also said that he believed it linked to his coverage of the trial and articles about the persecution of opposition political activists, such as the leaders of “Solnechnaya Koalitsya” and the unregistered opposition party “Ozod Dekhkonlar”. In particular Volosevich pointed the finger at the Uzbek secret services whom he accused of organising his beating. The secret services on 10 November accused him of staging the attack himself so as to help his case for political exile abroad.Since the May uprising, the Uzbek independent press has suffered serious harassment. At least five journalists have been beaten up, four have been imprisoned, two of whom remain behind bars. The BBC has had to close its offices as has the agency Internews. Seven journalists, six of them Uzbek, have been forced to leave the country and two of them have obtained refugee status abroad. Two reporters were sentenced and then amnestied. Dozens of others have been harassed and intimidated. In addition, the foreign media have been accused of complicity in stoking up the Andijan revolt. The 15 defendants on trial in connecting with the uprising were on 14 November found guilty by the Uzbek Supreme Court and were sentenced to prison terms ranging from 14 to 20 years. to go further UzbekistanEurope – Central Asia More than six years in prison for Uzbek blogger who covered corruption Uzbek blogger facing possible 10-year jail term RSF_en November 14, 2005 – Updated on January 20, 2016 Opposition online journalist assaulted Receive email alerts Follow the news on Uzbekistan UzbekistanEurope – Central Asia center_img Organisation News May 11, 2021 Find out more News News February 11, 2021 Find out more New press freedom predators elected to UN Human Rights Council News October 15, 2020 Find out morelast_img read more

Two Men Charged with DUI at Same Time, Driving Same Vehicle

first_imgTwo Jupiter men who are apparently brothers are in trouble for getting behind the while of the same vehicle while under the influence of alcohol.Palm Beach Gardens Police received a call about a reckless driver around 11:30 p.m. last Wednesday. When an officer arrived, he found 24-year-old found Alfredo Lopez Chaj in the driver’s seat of a running blue Nissan SUV near the Paloma neighborhood, near Central Boulevard and Interstate 95, according to police reports.Alfredo was standing outside the SUV by the time the officer got to the vehicle, the report adds.At that time, 20-year-old Martin Lopez Chaj slid from the passenger seat to the driver’s seat and was trying to put the car in reverse to flee, when the officer pulled him out.Florida law states that a person is considered to be driving if he or she is in control of a running vehicle in any way, even if it is not moving. The report details that both men smelled of alcohol and showed signs of impairment. It also noted that both had wet their pants. After each of the men was given a field sobriety test, Martin agreed to a breath test, and a sampling was recorded at 0.21, more than 2½ times the 0.08 threshold to be impaired while driving. However, Alfredo refused to take the test, which results in an automatic, one-year license suspension. Police say that neither man had a valid driver’s license.Officers were unable to determine how the men mat have been related. They live one block apart in Jupiter. The men were booked into the Palm Beach County Jail early Thursday. Alfredo left a few hours later on his own recognizance. Martin was still jailed as of midday Friday on $4,000 bond.Alfredo Lopez Chaj is charged with DUI and driving without a license. Meanwhile, Martin Lopez Chaj has been charged with DUI, DUI over 0.15, and driving without a license. The two men, who are natives of Guatemala, are landscapers, the report said. They are being represented by the Palm Beach County Public Defender’s Office.last_img read more

Leaf sniper Gavin Currie makes his own history

first_imgBy Bruce Fuhr,The Nelson Daily SportsMove over Mike Laughton.Take a seat Frank Carlson. Why don’t you just sit right down and relax Bill McDonnell. On the weekend Nelson fans celebrate 75 years of history in the Civic Centre Arena — history that includes more than just hockey events — there’s a new kid on the block making a name for himself across the parking lot from the Grand Old Barn.Gavin Currie is quickly becoming a household name to hockey fans in Nelson, much like Laughton, Carlson and McDonnell were during their playing days.“Everyone has been so nice to me. People who I’ve stayed with have welcomed me into their homes . . . . Nelson is kind of my second home away from home,” the Leaf scoring star recently told The Nelson Daily.Fans with any knowledge of the Leafs know quite well the value of the Abbotsford native.
Currie, 20, leads the Leafs in scoring with 33 points. He’s coming off a six-point weekend and has accumulated 15 points in the past eight games. However, getting Currie to the Heritage City was the sole mission of former Leaf coach and GM, Simon Wheeldon. And if the Leafs manage to find success this season, current skipper Chris Shaw should send a bottle of the best bubbly the way of the former main man.“Simon wrote me a letter after the (2008) Westside training camp to ask if I wanted to come to play for Nelson,” Currie explained. “I had a few other offers, but those teams were just sending me pamphlets and Simon really took an interest in me.”“He kept phoning me and phoning me and I finally I told him I’d give it a try and this is the best decision I’ve ever made,” Currie added. Currie has been one of the better Leaf players. Retract that statement. With all due respect to the Connor McLaughlin, Tyler Parfeniuk and Taylor O’Neil, the 6’1”, 175-pound forward is the best player on the roster all season long.“Gavin is a player in this league that probably shouldn’t be in this league but has found a home here in Nelson and really loves it,” Shaw said when asked about the team’s leading scorer. “He’s kind of a quiet leader in the dressing room and keeps the guys lighthearted. “But to have a player like that, a two-way player that’s so dynamic offensively, and pretty responsible defensively, it’s definitely a plus.”Despite finding his second home in Nelson, for a brief time after accepting Wheeldon’s offer Currie became a little scared as to where he was heading. So out came the B.C. road map of B.C. calm his nerves. “I never knew about Nelson. . .. I really never knew Nelson existed,” admitted Currie, adding fuel to frustrations of Interior folk that Lower Mainlanders don’t figure there is anything worth any value after Hope. “I thought (Nelson) was really Fort Nelson where it snowed and was minus-50 every day,” he added with a smile. But after landing in Kootenay Country Currie adapted quickly to Wheeldon’s four-line rotation. Playing in 39 games during his first season, Currie scored 13 goals while adding 16 assists for 29 points. That season was capped off with the KIJHL Championship. The success prompted Currie to seek out a spot in the B.C. Hockey League. However, the joys of playing in Junior B were quickly dashed at the Junior A level. The bad taste forced Currie to ask Wheeldon if there was a spot still on the Leafs.“Going to play BCHL last year as a 19-year-old I felt I wasn’t going to get that opportunity of being on a first or second line . . . realized all I would play is third or fourth line,” Currie said. “I never really wanted to tryout because after three previous years of being shutdown by teams and coaches and some never even calling me back, I’ve always come back here an never had a negative thought. “So looking at all the positives here, and never seeing one positive in the BCHL, I really wanted to stay here and I’m really glad with my decision.”Of course that decision was a little second-guessed by Currie when the Leafs jumped out to a, wait for it, a 0-4 start. The results didn’t get any better during the month of September for the younger, inexperienced Leafs. Nelson finished the month at 3-6, including a loss to bottom-feeding Grand Forks. However, since September Nelson has been gliding along at an 11-5 clip to climb to within two points of third-place Spokane Braves and eight behind Murdoch-leading Castlegar Rebels.A team the Leafs will be eager to knock down a few notches, Saturday in the old stomping grounds of Laughton, Carlson and McDonnell as the franchise helps Nelson celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Civic Centre.“Right now we’re finally starting to play like a team so hopefully everything will start to fall into place . . . which I sure it will,” said Currie.Who is looking to create his own history — history that surely will be talked about when Nelson celebrates 75 years in the current NDCC [email protected]last_img read more

NFL, NBA go political in year of protests

first_img0Shares0000Colin Kaepernick (C) and members of the San Francisco 49ers kneel for the national anthem in a protest at injustices suffered by minorities at the hands of law enforcement © GETTY/AFP/File / OTTO GREULE JRLOS ANGELES, United States, Dec 23 – From the US President describing protesting NFL players as “sons of bitches” to the pre-eminent superstar of the NBA disparaging the occupant of the White House as a “bum”, 2017 was the year that American sport went political.Decades of convention which had allowed the two phenomenally successful professional sports leagues to chug along peacefully, and apolitically, were swept away in the course on one tumultuous weekend in September. In February, as protests erupted across the nation after Donald Trump’s new administration issued restrictions on visitors from several Muslim nations, participants in Super Bowl 52 mostly stuck to the line that sport and politics should be kept apart.“I’m not talking politics at all,” said New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady. “If people want to take sides, they have a right to do that. I have a right to stay out of it too.”Brady would subsequently go on to lead the Patriots to an astonishing comeback from 28-3 down to defeat the Atlanta Falcons for a record fifth Super Bowl.In the immediate aftermath of that win, there was no hint of the controversy that would engulf America’s most popular sport soon after the 2017-2018 season kicked off seven months later. The seeds had been sown a year earlier, when San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick refused to stand for the national anthem in a protest aimed at drawing attention to injustices suffered by minorities at the hands of law enforcement.– Trump tirade –Yet as September rolled around, Kaepernick’s protest movement had largely fizzled.Participants in Super Bowl 52 mostly stuck to the line that sport and politics should be kept apart, with New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady saying “I’m not talking politics at all” © AFP/File / TIMOTHY A. CLARYKaepernick, a free agent, had found himself frozen out of the sport, with none of the 32 teams in the NFL seeing any value in a 30-year-old quarterback who had led the 49ers to the brink of a Super Bowl victory only four years earlier.A handful of players continued to kneel for the anthem in early season games, but as a story, the issue had been mostly forgotten. That all changed on September 22, when Trump, speaking at a rally in Alabama, raised the issue of NFL players who refused to stand for the anthem. To loud cheers, Trump said NFL owners should respond to the players by saying, “Get that son of a bitch off the field right now, he’s fired. He’s fired!”.The following day, Trump turned his attention to the NBA’s reigning champions Golden State and their star point guard, Stephen Curry.Curry, like many of his Warriors team-mates an outspoken critic of Trump, had earlier indicated he would be reluctant to visit a White House reception if the team was invited. Trump responded by withdrawing the team’s invitation.“Going to the White House is considered a great honor for a championship team. Stephen Curry is hesitating, therefore invitation is withdrawn!” he wrote.Trump’s outburst drew sharp criticism, with Cleveland Cavaliers superstar LeBron James leading the charge.“U bum @StephenCurry already said he ain’t going!” James wrote on Twitter. “So therefore ain’t no invite. Going to White House was a great honor until you showed up.”– ‘Lack of respect’ –The NFL, meanwhile, united in its response to Trump’s criticism of players who protest.Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors, an outspoken critic of President Donald Trump, indicated he would be reluctant to visit a White House reception if the team was invited © GETTY/AFP/File / EZRA SHAW“Divisive comments like these demonstrate an unfortunate lack of respect for the NFL, our great game and all of our players,” NFL commissioner Roger Goodell wrote in a statement.NFL team owners issued statements condemning Trump’s comments. But the most resounding statement came on the following Sunday, two days after Trump’s comments, when a wave of player protests erupted across the league in the biggest single demonstration of political activism in NFL history. All told, around 150 players across the league took to one knee during the playing of the US national anthem, instantly reigniting Kaepernick’s cause.“We felt like President Trump’s speech was an assault on our most cherished right — freedom of speech,” Denver star Von Miller explained.Trump’s anti-NFL invective has continued, as have the player protests, albeit on a smaller scale. The NFL meanwhile has had to navigate a difficult course, on the one hand defending protesting players from political attack while at the same time not antagonising fans who see refusal to stand for the anthem as an affront bordering on treason.Goodell has led talks with protesting players and the NFL has pledged nearly $100 million to charities which deal with criminal justice reform, law enforcement/community relations and education. The NFL hierarchy hopes the pledge will help draw a line under its season of protest, although there is no explicit requirement for players to refrain from demonstrating during the anthem.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

Get Testing: Mozilla Releases Firefox 4 Beta

first_imgRelated Posts A Web Developer’s New Best Friend is the AI Wai… Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… mike melanson Tags:#Browsers#news#web center_img Top Reasons to Go With Managed WordPress Hosting Word hit the Web this week, via a Mozilla executive posting on a developer list, that Firefox 4 was finally on its way next month. The only thing standing in the way? About 160 “hard blockers”, or significant bugs, that needed to be addressed. A big part of fixing bugs is testing and today Mozilla announced the next major version of Firefox 4 Beta for users to help test. The latest version includes increased performance, start-up time, bookmarking and graphics capabilities. Read on for the details. The next version of Firefox 4, said Mozilla senior director Damon Sicore, “is gonna kick ass” and here’s why, from the Mozilla blog:Firefox 4 Beta is built for the way people use the Web today, offering more control over the browsing experience. It introduces a fresh new look and features like App Tabs and Panorama to make it easier and more efficient to navigate the Web. Firefox 4 Beta also includes performance enhancements to make everything faster from start-up time to page-load speed and the performance of Web applications and games. Firefox Sync is integrated into the browser with Firefox 4 Beta, giving you access to your Awesome Bar history, bookmarks, open tabs and passwords across computers and smartphones.Firefox 4 Beta also enables developers to create fun Web apps and websites. With full support for HTML5 features in Firefox 4 Beta, developers can create new ways for people to enjoy the Web. This includes WebM and HD video, 3D graphic rendering with WebGL, hardware acceleration and the Mozilla Audio API to help create visual experiences for sound. Director of Product Platform Management Chris Blizzard has a full overview of all developer tools in Firefox 4 Beta. Now, if you’re anything like many of us here at ReadWriteWeb, you forgot about Firefox a good six months to a year ago and have fully moved on to Google Chrome. (For me, it’s something about the ultra-simple design – I just can’t pull myself back to anything else.) But that isn’t true for everyone. When you look at the global browser usage stats, it looks like Firefox has remained essentially even-keeled over the past year, while the most movement has been in adoption of Chrome and abandoning of Internet Explorer. 2009 ended with Firefox at around 31% and a year later, Firefox was at 30%. Chrome, in the meantime, went from around 5% to 15% and Internet Explorer (all versions) dropped from around 56% to 47%.
