Mulvane: Melick 9, Donaldson 14, Burkhart 20, Chambers 1, Endres 2. Total 8 (4) 18-26 46. by Tracy McCue, Sumner Newscow — In the end it was the kind of game that makes you think back and ask, “if only?” The Wellington girls fell one game short of the state tournament with a 46-41 loss to Mulvane in the sub-state championship in Rose Hill. This was Mulvane’s year with four senior girls who were dominating in middle school and pretty much carried the program for four seasons in high school. Eric Adam’s troops were hoping to crash the party. It almost did, had it not been for a cold patch down the stretch. It most certainly was a game much different than the first two contests. The underdog Dukes nearly pulled off an upset. Wellington ends its season at 13-9. The Crusaders will lose five seniors, including leading scorer Carlie McComb. But Wellington will have plenty of returning talent for the seasons ahead.“We played so hard tonight,” Adams said. “It was such an good all-out effort by our kids.”Wellington had lost to Mulvane 55-40 in the Mulvane Tournament and 61-38 on the road again. But Saturday was a different story.Using a point zone and triangle defense for most of the game, the Crusaders kept the normally hot-shooting Wildcats at bay.Wellington matched Mulvane with four three-pointers and had nine deuces to Mulvane’s eight from the field. But the one place Wellington could not stop the Wildcats was at the free throw line. Mulvane shot 18 of 26 including 8 of 10 in the fourth quarter. Wellington was 11 of 20 for the game, including a sub-par 5 of 11 in the first half. That was your ball game.“It is no secret we struggle at the line,” Adams said. “We shoot em and shoot em in practice and then in the game we struggle. It’s a mental thing.”Wellington opened the game with a McComb 3-pointer, and that helped Wellington sustain the lead for most of the first quarter. Mulvane hit a trey before the first quarter buzzer to take the lead. The key moments in the game were near the waning moments of both halves, when Mulvane had a significant scoring spurt. The Wildcats would take a 22-17 lead at the half. A killer 3-pointer by Mireia Salvador at the buzzer would bounce up to the top of the backboard and fall through. But it was nullified because it hit the top of the backboard. In the third quarter, Wellington would narrow the margin to one several times but could not regain the lead. At the end of three it was 31-28 Mulvane. In the fourth, Wellington was cold on five consecutive possessions including missing two layups. Nevertheless, Wellington was able to tie it midway through the quarter. But Mulvane would score the next seven points and take a 40-33 lead with one minute to play. The Dukes would get it down to four, before losing in the end.Lauryn Snipes led Wellington with 18 points. McComb had 14. Senior Kelsey Whaley had 4, and senior Jaedyn Ledesma had 2. Holly Wright and Avery Lewellen will graduate this year as well. Close Forgot password? Please put in your email: Send me my password!
