‘MY DONEGAL FAMILY ARE SO PROUD I’M PLAYING FOR IRELAND’, SAYS VILLA STAR

first_imgASTON VILLA star Ciaran Clark has spoken of his Donegal family’s immense pride – after he chose to play international soccer for Ireland. The Harrow-born player captained England at underage level, but has revealed how his decision to play at senior level for the Republic has gone down very well with the relatives.“I think they love the decision I have made and I’m sure they would have loved me to play for Ireland when I was a lot younger, but the time has come and I’ve made my decision, and I think they’re so proud of my decision in the end,” he said. Ciaran is the grandson of Vera Clark, originally from Moyle Hill in Milford, but now living in Manorcunningham.Ciaran’s father Michael, although born in Edinburgh when his family were working in Scotland for a time, is a former student of Drummond National School in Ballyare and played for Milford United under Fr Michael Herrity as a teenager. He is expected to start at left back when Ireland play Wales in a friendly this Tuesday and relatives from throughout Donegal will be travelling to the Aviva stadium – along with hundreds from Leitrim where Clark’s mother Peggy is from. And it was her accent which sparked Irish interest in the Villa player. Villa captain Richard Dunne noticed her accent after chatting to her after a game at Villa Park.“He didn’t try and pressure me or anything, he just asked me would I be interested in playing for Ireland, and I said I would be more than interested. He knew some of the coaches at Ireland, so he put the word in and since then it’s just been moving forward.”‘MY DONEGAL FAMILY ARE SO PROUD I’M PLAYING FOR IRELAND’, SAYS VILLA STAR was last modified: February 7th, 2011 by gregShare this:Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on LinkedIn (Opens in new window)Click to share on Reddit (Opens in new window)Click to share on Pocket (Opens in new window)Click to share on Telegram (Opens in new window)Click to share on WhatsApp (Opens in new window)Click to share on Skype (Opens in new window)Click to print (Opens in new window)last_img read more

SA, Germany deepen science alliance

first_img24 April 2013 South Africa and Germany have deepened their collaboration in science and technology and launched several initiatives in the field, it was announced at the close of the German-South African Year of Science last week. The Year of Science was an initiative between South Africa’s Science and Technology Department and the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research. One of the major outcomes was the Science and Technology Department committing R4-million to improving the skills base in South Africa as part of a research programme partnership with Germany to better understand the earth system. The deal was confirmed in a meeting between Science and Technology Minister Derek Hanekom and president of the Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences, Reinhard Huttl, in Berlin last Monday. ‘Enhancing competitiveness’ “For both our countries’ economies, strategic bilateral partnerships are key in engaging with the challenges that our countries and the globe face,” Hanekom said at the closing ceremony on Tuesday. Scientific innovation in particular enhances competitiveness, economic and human capital development and technology transfer, according to Hanekom. The two countries signed a science and technology cooperation agreement in 1996 with a joint research fund for research and development in agriculture, life, earth, mathematical, engineering, physical and health sciences. Since then, over 400 research and development projects, worth over R80-million, have been funded at universities, research institutions and industrial partners. The Year of Science created a “new quality of cooperation, improved contacts and networks, showing what a global responsibility could mean for the future”, said the Gernam Minister for Education and Research, Johanna Wanka.Strengthening collaboration “Our aim was to strengthen even more our collaboration in the field of science and technology – not only for the time of a year, but in the long run. “We identified together a number of issues such as bio-economics, health economics, climate change and urbanisation,” she said. Some of the other collaborative projects agreed on during the year include Germany joining the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) and the Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) projects. SASSCAL was developed to address global climate change problems in Africa, and involves South Africa, Angola, Namibia, Botswana and Zambia. “Following the Year of Science, there is a good indication that an increase in joint projects and demand for opportunities will derive from this bilateral cooperation, and that the cooperation will continue to serve as a catalyst for scientific development and improve the quality of life in the two countries,” the Science and Technology Department said. Wikipedia’s Parent Org Gets $2 Million Grant From eBay Founder

The Foundation has been concerned about the global economic climate’s impact on donations and is about to enter into a major new period of its history in which the free-form editing of Wikipedia will be slowed by a new approval process that has long been expected.Former eBay exec turned Omidyar partner Matt Halprin will become the ninth member of the Wikimedia Board of Trustees. Halprin doesn’t have a Wikipedia entry, and the Omidyar Networks’ entry “may require cleanup to meet Wikipedia’s quality standards.” Wikimedia said in its annual report that it plans to spend a total of $9.4 million over the 2009-2010 year. Just three years ago, in ’06-’07, the organization spent only $3 million. Back in the old days of ’04-’05, it cost just $100,000 to run everything. Wikimedia joins a long list of organizations in the Omidyar portfolio, including well-known Web 2.0 names like Digg, Seesmic and the Sunlight Foundation. Related Posts last_img read more

Terence Crawford seeks win first and respect after vs Amir Khan

first_imgPanelo: Duterte ‘angry’ with SEA Games hosting hassles MOST READ Cayetano: Senate, Drilon to be blamed for SEA Games mess That’s what Khan is doing. A match with fellow British star Kell Brook might pay him more, make him a bigger star in Britain and likely be more winnable, but he changed course when the Crawford offer became available. Khan doesn’t shy away from big odds or bigger fighters, facing middleweight champion Canelo Alvarez three years ago and using his speed to fight well for a few rounds before getting knocked out. After two years out of action, he returned in 2018 and has won two fights in a row. He has gone back to trainer Virgil Hunter, under whom he said he’s had his best success. The undercard includes Shakur Stevenson and Teofimo Lopez, 2016 Olympians who seem on the way to being stars as professionals. Khan was in their situation long ago and he has gone on to reach some highs, though they were offset by a few lows. But Arum knows of Khan’s capabilities, remembering watching him in Pacquaio’s training camp.“So I know what he brings to this party, and I am really looking forward to performances by two great fighters,” he said. “A generational talent in Terence Crawford, and one of the great fighters I’ve seen in Amir Khan.”Sports Related Videospowered by AdSparcRead Next Philippine Arena Interchange inaugurated PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games PLAY LIST 02:42PH underwater hockey team aims to make waves in SEA Games01:44Philippines marks anniversary of massacre with calls for justice01:19Fire erupts in Barangay Tatalon in Quezon City01:07Trump talks impeachment while meeting NCAA athletes02:49World-class track facilities installed at NCC for SEA Games02:11Trump awards medals to Jon Voight, Alison Krauss Promoter Bob Arum chose Crawford to headline the first pay-per-view card of Top Rank’s deal with ESPN, comparing him with Sugar Ray Leonard. The skills may be similar, but the resumes are not. Leonard’s fights against the likes of Roberto Duran, Thomas Hearns and Marvin Hagler have their own chapters in boxing history, while Crawford is still searching for the matchup that will ensure the legacy he craves.Even before the Omaha, Nebraska product impressively unified the four major 140-pound titles, he was already peppered with questions about when he’d move up to welterweight, as if a change in weight would assure a change in competition. Even the move to 147 and victory over Jeff Horn to take the WBO title didn’t do too much for him, because many people never thought Horn actually beat Manny Pacquiao to win the title in the first place.Victories over fellow welterweight champions Errol Spence Jr. or Keith Thurman couldn’t be ignored, but given boxing’s complicated politics he’s just as likely to get Leonard in the ring, at least for now.But Crawford continues trying. Top Rank was moving toward lining up a match with Luis Collazo — a fighter Khan beat — for this defense. Crawford wanted something he felt would be better and Khan was eager to accept.“Amir Khan is a great fighter,” Crawford said. “I can’t take nothing away from him. He’s done a lot in the sport of boxing. He has a big name. He’s undefeated at the welterweight division. So why not take another step up?”ADVERTISEMENT Ethel Booba twits Mocha over 2 toilets in one cubicle at SEA Games venue “When you’ve got undefeated gold medalists and world champions, where before the fight a lot of writers and fans think that they’re going to steamroll me or they’re too big for me, and this is going to be the toughest fight of my career, after the fight, they say, ‘He wasn’t that good,’” Crawford said. “Or, ‘He was a stand-up fighter.’ Or, ‘He was slow.’ Or, ‘We knew you were going to do this, we just had to hype up the fight.’ So they discredit me.”Crawford will try to keep finding fights that can change that, and he believes he’s got one Saturday.FEATURED STORIESSPORTSPrivate companies step in to help SEA Games hostingSPORTSPalace wants Cayetano’s PHISGOC Foundation probed over corruption chargesSPORTSSingapore latest to raise issue on SEA Games food, logisticsCrawford (34-0, 25 KOs) defends his welterweight title at Madison Square Garden against veteran Amir Khan (33-4, 20 KOs), the 2004 Olympic silver medalist from Britain who 15 years later is looking for what could be his biggest victory as a professional.“Terence is very high in the pound-for-pound rankings, maybe No. 1 or No. 2,” Khan said. “So, it’s just amazing for me to be in this position once again.
