Saudi Arabia widens travel ban to Europe, others over coronavirus

first_imgSaudi Arabia has extended flight and travel bans over coronavirus fears to include the European Union and 12 other countries after announcing 24 new cases overnight to bring its total to 45, state media reported on Thursday.Citizens and residents in the affected jurisdictions have 72 hours to return to the kingdom, state news agency SPA said, citing an official source at the Interior Ministry.Passenger traffic through all land crossings with Jordan was also suspended, while commercial and cargo traffic is still allowed. The kingdom had already banned travel to some 19 countries, including neighbouring Arab states, and said it would impose a fine of up to 500,000 riyals ($133,000) on people who did not disclose health information and travel details at entry points.Other preventive measures include locking down the oil-producing region of Qatif, where many of its cases are centred, suspending the Umrah pilgrimage, closing schools and cinemas nationwide, cancelling conferences and sporting events, and postponing a G20 ministerial meeting scheduled for next week.As well as the EU, the latest decision includes Switzerland, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Sudan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Eritrea, Kenya, Djibouti, and Somalia.Millions of migrant workers in Saudi Arabia come from many of those countries. The decision excludes health workers in the kingdom from the Philippines and India as well as evacuation, shipping and trade trips involving necessary precautions, the SPA report said.Topics :last_img read more

Tottenham confirm Paulinho capture

first_img The 24-year-old was a regular for Brazil during their Confederations Cup campaign which culminated in a 3-0 win over Spain on Sunday. Neither the fee or length of contract has been disclosed by the club. He told the club’s official Twitter account, @SpursOfficial: “I am very happy and excited to have joined Spurs. It’s a huge pleasure for my career to be at a club as big as Tottenham.” Press Association Tottenham have confirmed the signing of midfielder Paulinho from Corinthians.center_img Paulinho has become Andre Villas-Boas’ first summer recruit as he looks to reshape his squad ahead of a push for a top-four place in the Barclays Premier League next season. The player revealed during the tournament in his native country that a bid from Spurs to seal his signature had been lodged and that north London was his most likely destination. Inter Milan and Real Madrid were also believed to be interested in a move for the former Bragantino midfielder, who scored twice during the Confederations Cup, following on from his equalising goal in Brazil’s 2-2 draw with England last month. And the midfielder is hopeful of maintaining his form with his new club. “It’s a huge pleasure for my career to be at a club as big as Tottenham. I know it will be a huge challenge but I think I can help all my colleagues to succeed and give a lot of happiness to the supporters,” he said. “The training centre is amazing and I’m very impressed about the conditions Tottenham offers to the players. I will focus on my job and use the facility as much as possible. “We used to watch the Premier League in Brazil – including Tottenham – and this club has big players. I just want to help them to succeed here. It’s nice to have another Brazilian in the squad and I’m excited to meet with Sandro and all the players.” last_img read more

Fernandinho rues dropped points

first_img Press Association The 2-2 draw, three days after the 3-2 defeat by Liverpool, leaves City’s Barclays Premier League title hopes in tatters. Fernandinho had opened the scoring for City less than two minutes into the game but in the end Manuel Pellegrini’s tired-looking side were relieved to rescue a point. “It’s a very disappointing result,” said Fernandinho. “The whole team is disappointed about the result, especially in the way we played. The result was a complete disaster for us. “We started well and scored the goal, but for 50 minutes after that we lost control of the game and they played better than us. Right at the end we tried to score another goal but it wasn’t enough. “We scored after two minutes but then changed our style of game and paid for it. They had three clear chances in the first half and then scored two in the second half, when we lost our position on the pitch. “We need to keep our heads up and think about the next game, when we cannot make a silly mistake, as we did.” Fernandinho also conceded that fatigue may have contributed to City falling away from the title challenge. Premier League leaders Liverpool have played 13 fewer games than City this season because they have not been involved in Europe. “It can make some difference because we have been going for the Champions League, the Premier League and both cups and maybe our players are feeling a little tired,” added Fernandinho. “Maybe it has made a difference, but our team was good, especially in December and January.” The Brazilian however believes that City are still in with a chance of the title. Brazilian midfielder Fernandinho has admitted that Manchester City suffered “a complete disaster” after being held at home by bottom club Sunderland. He said: “Our focus has to be on West Brom on Monday, and that will be a massive match for us. “It’s really very hard, after the bad result against Liverpool. But we have to keep our head up and now need to look to West Brom here at home. “We believe we can win the title. Chelsea and Liverpool have four games and they may drop some points – we think we can still win the title. “We need to keep on – they can drop some points in their games and we need to win five games. We will see what happens in the end, but we need to recover our motivation for the next game and beat West Brom.” Pellegrini, meanwhile, is also refusing to throw in the towel and is keeping his fingers crossed that David Silva will be able to shake off an ankle problem for West Brom’s visit on Easter Monday. He said: “David has a problem with his ankle. He played the last two games in that condition but it was a game each week. “Playing after three days, he couldn’t do it [against Sunderland]. We will see if he is ok on Sunday for Monday. I hope he can play. “We have five games more to play and we will continue to have chances. “My duty is now to talk to the players and to win the last five games. This team was six points behind the leaders two years ago and won the title.” last_img read more
