Commentary: Good jobs in energy efficiency industries

first_imgCommentary: Good jobs in energy efficiency industries FacebookTwitterLinkedInEmailPrint分享Columbia Missourian:Developing and installing the technology to reduce fossil fuel use — known in the industry as “energy efficiency” — creates many more jobs than fossil fuels.Energy efficiency jobs in the United States totaled 2.18 million in 2016, more than double the total of fossil fuel production and fossil-fuel based electricity generation combined. They’re growing at a much faster rate, too. From 2015 to 2016, there was 53 percent employment growth in advanced and recycled building materials, and 59 percent employment growth in Energy Star appliances. Compare that to just 9 percent growth in fossil fuel-based electricity generation. These energy efficiency jobs are much cheaper to create. According to an academic study, every $1 million invested in energy efficiency creates 12 jobs, compared to just 4 or 5 for fossil fuel jobs. These are good, well-paying jobs. For example, electricians have a median hourly pay of $26, and the corresponding numbers for heating, ventilation, and air-conditioning (HVAC) workers and carpenters are $22.64 and $21.71, respectively. (Compare that to the median hourly pay for all U.S. workers, $18.12.)These jobs are more likely to be unionized, too. And they’re a great way to lift up people who’ve been left out of the fossil fuel economy. For example, Illinois has passed legislation requiring larger utilities to create renewable energy and energy efficiency job training programs, especially for people from economically disadvantaged communities — including youth of color, formerly incarcerated people, individuals who’ve been in the foster care system as children, and others.Oregon is another success story. Forty-seven percent of new jobs created through Oregon’s statewide residential energy efficiency program — and 55 percent of the hours worked — went to women and people of color. Median hourly wages for these jobs were 7 percent higher than the median hourly wage of $17.24 for all Oregon workers, and 81 percent of workers had health benefits.More: Want to create jobs? The difference is that credit unions care

first_imgCredit Unions have long operated on the “people helping people” philosophy and the seven cooperative principles. As not-for-profit, member-owned, cooperative financial institutions, we exist primarily to serve our members, not make a profit. So, when we combine our core concepts with our business model, we can’t help but show how much credit unions care—and truly, not just about our members and communities, but about our society as a whole.Except that—and this is a big one—except that the credit union industry has done a less-than-stellar job of convincing the larger public how we differ from the for-profit sector, especially banks who walk with bigger sticks and carry thicker wallets to maintain their market edge. So, credit unions have to get more creative. With our core concepts as inspiration and our cooperative structure as our backbone, we have only to place our credit union people in the middle of the action to increase visibility and raise awareness. We have to give our movement a voice that is as much visual as it is vocal and illustrate in memorable ways how credit unions are not only different, but how they are committed to giving back.In the Cornerstone region, we’re elevating the credit union difference to new heights with an initiative called Credit Unions Care (CUs Care); and we have pulled out all the stops, invited our affiliated credit unions to join us, and have designated the funds we raise from this campaign to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network hospitals in our region. We kicked things off in June 2015 and the campaign is ongoing. So far, we’ve raised just under $40,000 for CMN with the help of at least 135 credit unions—and counting. We’ve provided credit unions with paper “donation dogs” that their members can buy for $1 each and add their name to a special wall; sold stuffed dogs with the CUs Care logo; held a 10-city CU Ride motorcycle tour delivering stuffed dogs to sick children in CMN hospitals; and conducted a multitude of events and activities for good causes while wearing our vivid red CUs Care T-shirts. I assure you, when large numbers of people dressed in red T-shirts enter any space, they make a memorable impact.Day by day, our CUs Care campaign is helping us show what a real financial partner looks like. Our investment in these activities gets credit unions noticed for their good work, and that garners support and appreciation from all corners of the communities we serve, including the media locally, around the region, and even nationally. And we’re not done yet—not by a long shot.So when you consider the ways you can boost awareness about the credit union difference, consider beefing up your physical presence. I challenge you to find ways your credit unions can make a greater impact by getting more than vocal—by getting visual, and doing what you can in your communities to prove that Credit Unions Care isn’t just a campaign slogan. It’s the commitment that every credit union makes to its members. 389SHARESShareShareSharePrintMailGooglePinterestDiggRedditStumbleuponDeliciousBufferTumblr,Dick Ensweiler Richard L. Is your social media content good enough?

first_imgTrying to fully assess whether your social media content is meeting the grade? First things first, ask yourself this: does your visual content make your audience feel something? Whether it’s happy, laughing, intrigued, informed or simply pleased.. is your content making an emotional impact?Like many things in life, it can become far too easy to fall into an automated routine, sharing the same types of content week after week on social media. So try putting yourself in your customer’s shoes… would you enjoy seeing the content you’re sharing each day or week? If not, you could be putting yourself at risk to lose engagement, reach and following because of it. Owen Hargreaves calls on Arsenal to be open with the club’s supporters over Mesut Ozil situation

first_img Comment Arsenal fans are calling for Ozil to be reintegrated into the squad (Picture: Getty)‘Tonight is not the day to speak about that,’ he said. ‘He’s not in the squad. That is the decision tonight. Now we are going to work towards Sunday.’AdvertisementAdvertisementADVERTISEMENTWhile Ozil hasn’t always been universally popular amongst Arsenal supporters, the team has struggled to create too many chances of late leading to calls for him to be given an opportunity.Speaking on BT Sport, Hargreaves said: ‘They only had one shot on target against Sheffield United. You know you’re going to dominate possession, you could play Mesut, couldn’t you?‘You can play him in the hole and let him pick the killer pass. In certain games, you can play him. He obviously doesn’t trust him or fancy him for whatever reason.‘But Mesut in a team that functions when the balance is good is one of the best creators in the Premier League.‘They need to be more open with what the issue is.’On the eve of Arsenal’s Europa League encounter with Vitoria, Ozil posted a cryptic message on social media which read ‘You make me laugh…’ alongside a picture of him in training and many interpreted it as a dig at his manager. You make me laugh… pic.twitter.com/DohUXm3oSH— Mesut Özil (@MesutOzil1088) October 23, 2019 Metro Sport ReporterSaturday 26 Oct 2019 3:00 pmShare this article via facebookShare this article via twitterShare this article via messengerShare this with Share this article via emailShare this article via flipboardCopy link3.7kShares Mesut Ozil has been frozen out by Unai Emery this season (Picture: Getty)Owen Hargreaves believes that Arsenal should be more transparent over the continued omission of Mesut Ozil from Unai Emery’s starting line-up.The 31-year-old has featured just twice for the Gunners this season and hasn’t played in a Premier League game since the 2-2 draw against Watford in September.Despite criticism mounting over his refusal to involve the World Cup winner, Emery issued a blunt response when asked why he wasn’t involved against Vitoria in the Europa League on Thursday night. Mourinho favourites Lukaku, Matic send Man Utd into semi-finals

first_imgMata took the set-piece himself, which ended with Tim Krul turning Chris Smalling’s shot against the post. Brighton missed a rare chance before the break when Pascal Gross’s corner picked out Dunk, who had lost his marker Scott McTominay, and his powerful effort was well saved by Sergio Romero. However, the visitors started the second half in far more ambitious mode with Gross appearing in dangerous positions to, first, shoot just wide and then see an effort blocked.Jurgen Locadia then forced Romero into a fine save high to his right.Albion were building momentum and should have been level when Locadia headed wastefully wide when unmarked at the back post. That miss was proved costly as United’s efficiency showed when Matic headed home their second goal from just their second shot on target all night.Share on: WhatsApp And seven minutes from time, Matic rose in convincing fashion to meet Ashley Young’s pinpoint free-kick and head in a goal that finally killed off a strong second-half showing from the visitors.Mourinho had used his pre-match press conference on Friday to launch an impassioned defence of his reign as United manager, in which he had hinted broadly that a number of his players had not been performing consistently this season – with only Lukaku and Matic singled out for praise.Coincidentally or not, the United manager left two of his biggest signings, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, out of his starting line-up despite the FA Cup being his club’s only hope of silverware this season following the disappointing midweek loss to Sevilla in the Champions League.A flurry of snow before kick-off made sure the game kicked off in difficult conditions, and it was the half-hour mark before Brighton’s defence was remotely troubled when Juan Mata played a series of sharp passes with Anthony Martial to open up a shooting opportunity which was deflected behind for a corner.center_img Manchester, United Kingdom | AFP | Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic, the only two players to escape criticism from manager Jose Mourinho this week, scored the goals that carried Manchester United through to the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Brighton at Old Trafford.Lukaku struck after 37 minutes although his 25th goal of the season owed everything to the delivery by team-mate Matic who sent over a far-post cross which hung invitingly for the Belgian international. As he has so often this season, Lukaku powered past his marker Lewis Dunk before forcing the ball in with a header from almost point-blank range.last_img read more

DeeeFence

first_imgThere were all sorts of fly by night Steelers fans sitting on the “fence” of support. They were the ultimate “stradlers” moaning and groaning after Jamaal Charles took it upon himself to make the Steelers realize the fact that there aren’t any teams that are invulnerable and any team can be beat. With 8:42 left in the first quarter Charles capped a 4 play, 70 yard drive with a 12 yard touchdown run. That opening touchdown scored by the K.C. Chiefs should have served as a wakeup call for the Steelers lackluster offense, but alas it did not. As of game time the Steelers only trailed the Houston Texans in T.O.P (time of possession) in the entire NFL but in the opening quarter Kansas City kept the ball for 9:42 compared to the Steelers 5:18 and most of the time their efforts were non productive. After an Issac Redman fumble, the Chiefs could only muster a field goal. The words of Steelers offensive tackle Willie Colon began to echo in my ears. Colon told me last week that, “We are taking these guys very seriously. Defensively and on paper they have a lot of first round guys. They are very athletic. This is one of those games that if you fall asleep you may find yourself in a hot dog fight. As far as us needing motivation their [the Chiefs] record doesn’t really show what we see watching them on tape. They can really get after guys.”It seemed that the Steelers took a Rumpelstiltskin approach both offensively and defensively for the first twenty five minutes of the game. The Steelers never really awakened even though they won the game 16-13. The game went into overtime and it took an interception and a 23 yard run back by Lawrence Timmons to set up the winning field goal by Shaun Suisham before the Steelers could relax and seal the win. In my last installment I warned the Black and Gold to beware of the “ides of March,” oops I meant November. The Steelers won the battle against the Chiefs but ‘Big’ Ben suffered a separated shoulder that will prevent him from playing in the next few games. It’s anyone’s guess how long he will be out, but he left the field in the third quarter seeming to not want to move his right arm and was still favoring it when he was transported out of the stadium prior to being taken to the hospital. He will miss the upcoming game against the Ravens at Heinz Field on Sunday. The injury to Roethlisberger may have his replacements saying to Terrell Suggs and the remainder of the Ravens nasty and relentless D-line; no mas, “etu brutalizers.” Baltimore is going to be genuinely foaming at the mouth just thinking about facing the immobile, sloth footed Steelers second string QB, Byron Leftwich. Although Leftwich has a cannon for an arm; his time in the forty can be calculated in minutes as opposed to seconds. The Ravens will attempt to use brute strength to rattle Leftwich in order to keep the pressure on Pittsburgh’s shaky offensive line and to keep the pressure off of Baltimore’s thin and suspect secondary. The victory against the Chiefs appears to be a shallow conquest. Is it just me or does it seem as if Roethlisberger is “snake bit” when it comes to hard fought games just prior to the Steelers playing the Ravens.Pittsburgh cannot allow Roethlisberger’s injury to evolve into a weeks long soap opera-like saga. There can be no guessing game as to whether ‘Big’ Ben is going to play or practice or both. There is an AFC North title and a possible playoff berth on the line. They should not mess around for the sake of the media creating a guessing game and in the process nurture a Barnum & Bailey circus type atmosphere that will ultimately surround the mystery of when and where Roethlisberger might take his next snaps.Whoever is going to start the game for the Steelers against the Ravens should get all of the first string reps in order to be adequately prepared to face one of the most ferocious defenses in the NFL. The Ravens might be without their fearless leader, soon to be Hall-of-Famer, linebacker Ray Lewis but they still have some “horses” on defense and are dangerous every Sunday, Monday, Saturday heck any day that they take the field. There is simply no “defense” against the Steelers sitting on the fence or playing “footsie” in regards to who will take the snaps against Baltimore. If Pittsburgh wavers in any shape, form or fashion in reference to will he or won’t he start they just may be playing “musical chairs” with their playoff hopes. There can be no knight in shining armor riding in on a white horse to save the day type of “shenanigans” described as “heroics.”(Aubrey Bruce can be reached at: [email protected] or 412-583-6741.
