A push for absentee voters

first_img AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREBlues bury Kings early with four first-period goals “It’s one thing to be proud to be Mexican, it is another thing to have a voice,” she said. After years of pressure from immigrant groups, the Mexican government last June voted to allow Mexican emigrants – who send back billions of dollars and have become an increasingly important economic force in the country – to vote via absentee ballot in the presidential election. Mexican nationals and those with binational residency can register online or at a local consulate until Jan. 15, the deadline. Immigrant rights groups have also been handing out registration forms. To register, Mexicans living outside their country must have an electoral card issued in Mexico. Until last month, nationals had to return to their home state to obtain the cards. But after increasing pressure from immigrant groups the Instituto Federal Electoral, the country’s electoral agency, announced it would open a half-dozen information booths in border towns, including Tijuana, where electoral cards could be issued. “The people are responding, I have been getting so many calls,” said Jorge Arturo Garcia, the president of Comite del Partido Revolucionario Institucional en California. The political party – which formerly ruled over Mexico for 70 years – is sponsoring a caravan to Tijuana today from Huntington Park. So far, 50 immigrants have signed up to pay $20 for the caravan. Other groups have also sponsored trips, including a free one put on by Consejo de Feraciones Mexicanas en Norte America, an umbrella organization representing more than 10,000 Mexican immigrants. “People want to vote and they want to participate. But they are not happy with this process,” Garcia said. For instance, illegal Mexican immigrants won’t be able to return to obtain electoral cards. And those who can register must spend $8 to certify the registration applications. As of Nov. 22, only 2,100 have registered to vote, just a small fraction of the estimated 4 million eligible Mexican voters living in the United States. Mexican officials were unavailable Friday, but last week, the voter registry director for the agency told The Associated Press he was expecting a surge in registrations since setting up the booths. The agency’s campaign also includes a special jingle from Norteno band Los Tigres del Norte, and it plans to deploy small army of electoral workers at airports and bus stations to help nationals returning for the holiday register over the next two months. And later this year, the agency will roll out commercials on Spanish-language television. Still, the effort does not satisfy many immigrant organizations who complain the agency has not provided enough information for would-be voters. “(The Mexican government) can do all the promotion it wants, but what we need is more assistance. We need people to help us face to face,” said Adrian Maldanado, the former president of a group representing immigrants from the Mexican state of Nayarit. “They know that the Mexican vote (abroad) could define what president will be in Mexico.” Moreover, he said, the majority of potential voters that are willing to vote can’t obtain their electoral card even if they wanted to. Many are illegal immigrants and cannot return to the country. Mexican officials said they are merely ensuring that it will be a secure voting process. As the Mexican government launches an $8 million absentee-vote campaign to nationals abroad, immigrant and political groups have set out by the busload to register for the 2006 presidential elections in Tijuana and other border towns. Longtime U.S. residents like Alexandra Vargas view the vote as a way to reconnect with her roots and have a stake in their homeland while more recent migrants see it as a long-overdue way to exercise their political voice. “Now that I am registering to vote, I feel more Mexican than ever and am more proud. But more importantly, I have a say in Mexico … and I can improve it,” said the 34-year-old hospital facilities manager, who came from the state of Michoacan at the age of 7. Vargas, who on Wednesday traveled with an immigrants right group to Tijuana to apply for an electoral card, said filing out the registration forms was so encouraging that she brought back a small stack for her family in Arleta. She spent much of Thanksgiving convincing her parents and siblings to register. last_img read more

Jordy Smith edged in Mr Price Pro final

first_img8 July 2013 Semi-finalsThe Australian contingent proved dominant on the final day of competition, with Stu Kennedy and Mitch Crews reaching the semi-finals and placing equal third. Stop number three of eight on the ASP Prime Series culminated with the most anticipated match-up of this year’s competition, with event standouts, Smith and Wilson, living up to expectations with inspired performances in front of a capacity crowd. ‘A big result for me’“Jordy and Julian have been standouts all event and there’s not much you can do when they’ve got you. This is a big result for me and I hope to continue my run and get a bunch more results to make the tour next year.” Wilson is the second Australian to win the event since Chris Davidson in 2008. He pocketed R407 500 (US$40 000) for the win and also rocketed to world number in the ASP World Rankings. “I’m really happy to get the win,” Wilson said of his 18.93 to 16.70 victory over Smith. “It’s my third time in Durban and I’ve gotten a good result each time. Nonetheless, he rocketed from world number 53 to 31 and will be looking to climb the ladder in the hope of qualifying for the World Championship Tour in 2014. ‘Pressure’“Jordy put the pressure on me at the start, but there were plenty of opportunities and I just had to flip the heat and put some scores on the board,” Wilson said. “That was the first time I’ve landed that air in a contest and I had to do something because I had my back against the wall. I’m stoked I could pull it off and come away with the win.” ‘A great place’“I really enjoy spending time here. It’s a great place, with friendly people, where I feel warm and comfortable. It definitely helps with my results.” Crews showed plenty of big match temperament in his semi-final clash with Wilson. Yet despite producing a full repertoire of manoeuvres, Crews was unable to find the near perfect score he needed to beat the polished and more experienced Wilson.center_img Kennedy suffered a case of nerves against Smith in their semi-final match up. Feeling the pressure against the local favourite, Kennedy went for big turns, but was uncharacteristically not able to stick them. Australian Julian Wilson defeated South African surfing star Jordy Smith in a memorable, high-scoring final to capture the Mr Price Pro Ballito on the KwaZulu-Natal north coast on Saturday. Dream runSmith had a dream run through to the final with a string of quality performances and high scores as he defeated Aritz Aranburu in the quarterfinals and Stu Kennedy in the semi-finals. Unfortunately for the South African, it was not the dream finish he’d hoped for. He nonetheless took home R207 500 (US$20 000) and the number two position in the world rankings. “I’m really happy to get all the way to the semis and to surf against Julian,” said Crews, who climbed from 39th to 27th in the world rankings with the win. Knowing he needed something extraordinary to take the win, Wilson put everything on the line, completing an extremely critical Alley Oop aerial manoeuvre to score the first perfect 10 of this year’s competition. Following up with an 8.93 slob grab reverse aerial, Wilson cemented his win over the local favourite. “It was an honour to surf in the final against Julian, I’m just sorry I didn’t win it,” said Smith, the winner of the event in 2010. “Julian stuck that air and it was amazing. I went on a trip to Reunion with him and he tried it a million times and didn’t make it and then he goes into the final and sticks it first time!” While Smith assumed an early lead to put Wilson in a combination situation (needing a combination of two scores) with his 7.67 and 8.83 (out of ten) scores, it was Wilson’s high-risk approach that was rewarded. Forrester Predicts One-Third of U.S. Consumers Will Be Tablet Users by 2015

first_imgaudrey watters In tweaking its prediction, Forrester says it has changed some of its assumptions around replacements rates that “we think will be closer to that of MP3 players or iPhones than to that of PCs.” Calling these “lifestyle devices,” Forrester says it thinks people will more readily purchase replacements and upgrades than they would for a “utilitarian device” like a PC.Do you agree with Forrester’s new figures? Still too conservative? Or has Forrester overestimated the tablet’s future success? Tags:#news#NYT#web Related Posts Why Tech Companies Need Simpler Terms of Servic… Forrester Research has published a revised forecast for the U.S. consumer tablet market today, noting that its initial predictions from last year were “too conservative.” Indeed, Apple’s introduction of the iPad changed the game, so to speak, for tablet adoption, and many people are predicting 2011 – or least CES – to be replete with tablet-related announcements.Forrester has revised its forecast upward to 10.3 million units for 2010 and says that it expects sales to more than double in 2011 to 24.1 million units. Of these sales, most will be iPads, as Forrester predicts Apple’s dominance over the tablet market will continue through 2012. Is Online Video Editing the Future?

first_imgIs storing all your footage online the future of video editing? The potential is there, but can internet speeds handle the workload? The cloud has become the standard term for what is essentially just a network of servers. Many companies are now getting into hosting “cloud” services. Adobe has moved their entire Creative Suite to the Creative Cloud. However, with Adobe Creative Cloud, your computer still handles the workload. Now companies are looking into handling all your project files as well. Companies like Shutterstock, GoPro, and YouTube are all offering online video editing. The goal is to allow you to edit on one machine and easily pick up the project on another machine anywhere in the world. Here are a few online video editors already available for use.1. YouTube EditorYouTube Editor allows YouTube users to combine clips and images online. You can easily trim video, add music from the YouTube audio library, and apply certain effects. Mostly, you can just rotate clips, stabilize footage, adjust speed, color correct, add filters, and apply text. It’s an incredibly basic program, and is also the standard of online video editing. For beginners, the program is easy to learn. It’s a great stepping stone for anyone interested in learning how to edit video. With it being so easy to master, you’ll likely want more options sooner than later.2. Shutterstock SequenceSequence is an easy-to-use online video editing tool, currently only available for Chrome. The additional benefit of Sequence is the ability to easily use and purchase Shutterstock footage. Over two million Shutterstock videos and audio tracks can be dragged and dropped into the project. Users can also upload their own video and audio files, and then share with colleagues or clients for review.Sequence stands out from all these other online video editors because of the stock footage option. You can easily mix in some stock clips to enhance your project, or just solely use stock footage and then just pay for the clips you use. It’s a real step forward in online video editing.3. GoPro StudioGoPro Studio is a relative newcomer to the online video editing industry. It offers the same trim and slow motion options as other online video editing programs, but they are specific for GoPro users. GoPro Studio has a built in fisheye adjustment control, time lapse assembler, and is capable of editing 3D footage from the Dual HERO System. You can also easily export full resolution stills from your video footage, and find any footage you marked with HiLight Tags.4. WeVideoWeVideo also offers the same standard options as those listed above. What makes it stand out is the ability to have multiple video editors work on a project right away; it’s really easy to set up joint projects. Users also have the ability to import footage from their Google Drive, Dropbox accounts, or social media sites like Instagram, Flickr, and Facebook. WeVideo also offers tiered services. Accounts are free up to 5GB of cloud storage. 30GB Premium accounts come in at $7 a month and 100GB Pro accounts at $20 a month. So, What About the Future? As you can see, these programs are all very limited. Outside of rearranging footage and trimming clips, you can’t go into too much detail with your video edits. If you have to make a quick video in minutes, or if you want your engaged cousin to make her own slideshow, then these online video editors are fantastic. Beginners can easily use these online editors for simple projects. Now, back to our original question. Are online video editors the future? Yes. Especially if companies like Adobe figure out how to manage all your footage. If Adobe Creative Cloud finds a way to let Premiere Pro and After Effects use online footage, there will be a huge shift in the industry. Same goes for Apple and FCPX.Currently only massive studios and production houses can handle online video editing internally, on their own servers. If it becomes universal, sharing projects with other video editors or clients will save so much time. No more exports of half-finished projects, no more mailing hard drives, no more hassle. The problem with this are the massive files sizes. Editing 4K footage online is near impossible as is. Heck, most computers struggle editing 4K footage. And 4K footage is just the beginning. RAW files, layers of complex animation and graphics, and any other massive file type will bottleneck the internet speed. Once someone figures out how to compress these files, we will see some tremendous advances in online video editing.Want more on video editing? Strategic management expert available to comment on Fiat Chrysler record fine recall

first_imgAddThis ShareEXPERT ALERTDavid [email protected] [email protected] management expert available to comment on Fiat Chrysler record fine, recallHOUSTON – (July 27, 2015) – Anastasiya (Annie) Zavyalova, assistant professor of strategic management at Rice University’s Jones Graduate School of Business, is available to discuss the historic settlement that Fiat Chrysler has reached with U.S. regulators to stave off legal problems arising from about two dozen safety recalls.ANASTASIYA ZAVYALOVAThe settlement reportedly provides that the Italian-American automaker must offer to buy back from customers nearly 200,000 recalled Ram pickups and Dodge SUVs and pay a fine of $105 million.Zavyalova is available for interviews to discuss the fallout and next steps for Fiat Chrysler. Her research focuses on negative events in organizations (such as product recalls, NCAA scandals in U.S. universities and child abuse scandals in the Catholic Church) and the role of media and organizational identification for stakeholder support following negative events.“As my research suggests, news about defective products is detrimental for any company’s brand and reputation,” Zavyalova said. “Three caveats help understand how detrimental the recall is for Chrysler.“First, how severe were the consequences of the defect for the company’s stakeholders? In this case, some reports suggest that the problem has been ongoing and that as of 2013, more than 50 deaths had been linked to the problem. This attests to the severity of the problem that Chrysler now has to face head-on.“Second, are the company’s competitors facing similar issues? News about car safety problems involving Chrysler’s close competitors such as Honda, Toyota and GM can be, in fact, beneficial for Chrysler,” Zavyalova said. “The company may be able to point to an industrywide safety problem and deflect public attention from its brand.“Third, what are the company’s reputation repair strategies? As my research suggests, when the company is culpable of wrongdoing (such as selling defective cars), it helps to cooperate with the government agencies (in this case NHTSA) and to work closely with customers to address the problem. Chrysler is doing both, which should help it recover from the negative publicity,” she said.Zavyalova suspects that the news will negatively affect Chrysler’s stock price. However, industrywide safety problems and Chrysler’s direct actions to address the issue should soften the damage to its reputation, she said. For more information or to schedule an interview with Zavyalova, contact David Ruth, director of national of national and broadcast media at Rice, at [email protected] or 713-348-6327.Rice University has a VideoLink ReadyCam TV interview studio.
