Football Should Return to Days of Glory

first_imgLiberian sports, particularly football, is expected to return to its glory days as soccer legend George Manneh Weah joined former female soccer striker Geraldine Doe-Sheriff and former Mighty Barrolle member, Francis S. Paye at the Liberian Senate.Senator Doe-Sherrif was a skipper for the erstwhile Sinkor Lioness FC one of the first but successful female soccer teams in the country. She was renamed Lady Zico after her brother Ezekiel Doe, then known as Zico. Ezekiel played for St. Joseph’s Warriors and later joined Darling Club, Invincible Eleven, before leaving for the United States. He is presently back in Liberia.Lady Zico was one of the pioneers of the female soccer revolution and aware of the financial challenges that associate with the development of the female game, she is in a better position to help develop the game for Liberia and for the world. It is without question that soccer made the legend George Weah and therefore it goes without saying that he must give back to football. And what better way to do so than to use his influence to provide what has always been the most challenging item in the development of the game insufficient funding for the national team.In the days when local football got impressive audience and Invincible Eleven and Mighty Barrolle, among other local teams, commanded some attention, it was during the administrations of former presidents Alhaji G. V. Kromah and the late Aletha Johnson, that Francis Paye made his mark for Barrolle.Records indicate that Francis Paye (Hon. Paye), and a committee he chaired led to the organization of fan clubs for Mighty Barrolle in the various ministries and agencies of government.Hon. Paye knows what it takes to develop and manage a football team. In fact presently, he is the founder of Paye United FC, a team that is based in his home county Rivercess that he sorely sponsor financially.Which concludes the argument that he is aware of the enormous funds that are needed to run the club and since attention here is on the national team it goes without saying that he is in a better position at the Senate to ensure adequate financial support from the Liberian government to support the development of a better national team.Soccer lovers are on high expectation that Senators Doe-Sherrif, Paye and Weah would play their cards consistently well to encourage mass support of their colleagues so that Liberia national would not be a spectator in the next African Cup of Nations.Soccer legend George Weah knows Lone Star’s business as far back as 2002. He knows how much was involved back then and therefore should know what may be involved now to develop a better national team.It would be an extreme disappointment now that former national team players are handling the various teams and do not to receive the much needed wherewithal from those they are looking up to for the change of fortunes that the various national teams are crying for.Share this:Click to share on Twitter (Opens in new window)Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window)last_img read more
