REVEALED What was inside the black trunk in PM Modis chopper

first_imgScreengrab from the video that was spotted being carried out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter.TwitterThe Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Chitradurga district unit on Sunday (April 14) said the “suspicious black trunk” that was spotted being carried out of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter had electronic equipment and party logos to be used on the dais for the prime minister’s speech in Karnataka last week for poll campaign. The development comes after the Congress party demanded a probe into the alleged transportation of the black box in PM Modi’s chopper during his visit to Karnataka. Congress spokesperson Anand Sharma asked the prime minister to come clean and said the Election Commission should inquire into the contents of the “trunk”.He said the Congress’ Karnataka unit has already filed a complaint with the Election Commission in this regard. The prime minister had addressed an election rally in Karnataka’s Chitradurga on April 9.A mysterious box was unloaded from PM Modi’s helicopter at Chitradurga yesterday and loaded into a private Innova which quickly sped away. The #ElectionCommission should enquire into what was in the box and to whom the vehicle belonged. @ceo_karnataka pic.twitter.com/iudqT143Bv— KPCC President (@KPCCPresident) April 13, 2019″We saw there were three more choppers escorting the prime minister’s helicopter. After landing, a black trunk was taken out and whisked away in a private car which was not part of the SPG carcade,” he alleged. Sharma suggested there was cash stashed in the trunk. “What was there in the trunk. If there was no cash in it, let there an inquiry be held.”The party also played a video clip claiming that the purported trunk, after being unloaded from the PM’s helicopter, was shipped to a private Innova car, that Sharma alleged was not a part of the SPG carcade, and taken away.Sharma also asked Modi to give an account of his five-year rule to the people of the country as a tribute to Dr B R Ambedkar on his birth anniversary.”The Prime Minister is trying to control and change the narrative because he has no courage the face real issues,” he alleged.Raising the issue of Rafale, Sharma asked Modi to make public the minutes of a meeting held last year between him and former French president Francois Hollande on the fighter jet deal.”Why is he (PM) silent on his role in Rafale scam? Make the minutes of the meeting between Prime Minister and former French president Francois Hollande on the Rafale deal public by tomorrow. As there has been a controversy, it would help settle it once for all,” he said. The Prime Minister in his “desperation to win has done an enormous disservice to the nation by dragging in the Armed Forces for Partisan political propaganda”, Sharma further alleged.”Seeking votes for the courageous action and sacrifices of our soldiers is an unpardonable transgression and also an insult to the Armed forces who defend the motherland under the tricolour and not under one person or party. The Indian Army belongs to the Republic of India,” he said.Sharma also slammed BJP leader and Union minister General VK Singh (Retd).”There is Prime Minister’s defence and his apology minister including one of his ministers, who should have been made literate in the military history of the country. I am referring to retired General VK Singh, he said – Indira Gandhi benefitted electorally from the Bangladesh war.””Is he ignorant of history when he himself was a commissioned officer?” Sharma asked.”To reeducate him, these are the facts: General Singh got commissioned in June 1970, Smt Indira Gandhi recorded a massive electoral win in March 1971 and India won the 13-day war with Pakistan on 16 December 1971. VK Singh should extend an unconditional apology,” he said.(Inputs from agencies)last_img read more

On DDay US allies look for unity and fear the Trump show

first_imgUS President Donald Trump during a Memorial Day ceremony. AFP File Photo. For a sign of how far Western politics and transatlantic relations have changed, look no further than next week’s D-Day commemorations in Britain and northern France.Five years ago, for the 70th anniversary, former US president Barack Obama travelled to France to stand with America’s allies and deliver a moving tribute to their joint sacrifice and shared destiny in World War II.In what was condemned as vulgar and disrespectful by right-wing opponents at the time, he was filmed chewing gum during one of the ceremonies — apparently to stop a craving for a cigarette.Starting from Wednesday, US president Donald Trump will attend two days of memorials in Britain and France for the 75th anniversary of the world’s biggest naval operation, which signalled the start of efforts to liberate western Europe.”It’s not the same world,” Francois Heisbourg, a former French diplomat and head of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, told AFP.While European leaders in Obama’s era would sometimes complain privately that Europe was a low priority for the US president, none ever imagined a US leader actively working to undermine the European Union. And Trump, who has cheered Brexit and is openly hostile to the idea of the EU bloc, has ripped up postwar conventions to such an extent that chewing gum at a ceremony seems like an offence from a different era.He has publicly refused a handshake with German chancellor Angela Merkel, called Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau “weak” and has humiliated British prime minister Theresa May over her strategy to negotiate Britain’s departure from the EU.On his last visit to France in November last year to mark 100 years since World War I, he left mocking the “very low approval rating” of his host, president Emmanuel Macron.Heisbourg said that “everyone will wait anxiously for the end of the ceremonies fearing a Twitter storm from Donald Trump.”Despite all this, Jeremy Shapiro, an expert on transatlantic relations at the European Council on Foreign Relations, said that relations between the US leader his Western counterparts “aren’t disastrous”.”They still want to be allies, but there isn’t that same sense of shared destiny which is what you need to land people on a beach together. There’s a sense that they can have transactions that work,” he told AFP.”Trump has caused everyone to see him in that light, and that’s how they see him,” he added.Russian president-elect Vladimir Putin takes the oath of office during a ceremony at the Kremlin in Moscow on 7 May 2018. AFP- Putin absent -The commemorations of the D-Day landings, which saw 150,000 Allied soldiers storm the beaches of northern France on 6 June, 1944, will begin on Wednesday morning.Queen Elizabeth II will preside at a ceremony in Portsmouth in southern England attended by May, Macron, Trudeau, Merkel and Trump, who begins a state visit to Britain on Monday.Thousands of ships left from Portsmouth under cover of darkness 75 years ago for an invasion that signalled the start of the liberation of western Europe from Nazi occupation.British authorities have said the D-Day event will be “one of the greatest British military spectacles in recent history” involving 26 RAF aircraft and 11 Royal Navy vessels. On Thursday, ceremonies in France will continue along the wide sandy beaches where troops faced a hail of Nazi bullets and artillery shells which left 10,470 dead, wounded or missing on the first day.One notable absentee will be Russian president Vladimir Putin, who was invited to represent the Soviet Union for the first time in 2004 on the 60th anniversary of the invasion. He was also present in 2014, just as his relations with the West were collapsing over his decision to order troops into eastern Ukraine to annex Crimea.”In 2014, the attack in Crimea gave the Allies something to unite around,” Heisbourg said. The Russian leader, whose government made “sweeping and systemic” efforts to help get Trump elected in 2016 — according to an investigation by US special counsel Robert Mueller — was not invited this time.- Bridging differences -European leaders and Trump are at odds on a number of issues, any one of which has the potential to become a public source of friction at this week’s ceremonies. The US leader has repeatedly threatened to impose new tariffs on European imports, and there are also major differences on climate change, Iran’s nuclear ambitions and the civil war in Syria. The sensitive issue of defence spending is seen as one possible flashpoint, given the occasion and Trump’s past comments. The US president regularly assails European leaders for their failure to spend the equivalent of 2.0 per cent of their GDP on defence. The figure was agreed by all members of the NATO alliance, which grouped the Allies together after WWII, while Obama was still in office.”There’s a high risk that Donald Trumps uses the ceremonies to remind everyone about the dependence of Europe on the United States for its security and defence,” Heisbourg said.A source in the French presidency said Macron was hoping to use the opportunity to bridge some of his differences with Washington. The D-Day commemorations are a “good opportunity to celebrate this common victory and to explore some of the priority issues between us to try to bring our positions closer together,” an aide said on condition of anonymity.last_img read more

Celebrating IndiaChina Tourism Year

first_imgTo celebrate the Visit China Year in India 2016, China National Tourism Administration (CNTA) will organise Chinese OPERA Show, the classic milestone-style opera, which will showcase ‘Goddess Marriage – An unbelievable Love Story from China,’ on January 14 at Sirifort Auditorium. The event will be programmed by Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre, China. The main aim of this cultural evening is to present a slice of Chinese culture to the Opera lovers in India, and to encourage Indian tourists to visit China. Huangmei Opera has grown into a famous opera enjoying a good reputation from folk drama. It mainly narrates a beautiful love story between immortal and mortal.   Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Act 1 will showcase “The Magpie Bridge”- Rules are heavy and time is dreary in heaven, where the seven fairies came to the magpie bridge to have a peep on mortal word while their father, the Jade Emperor was busy. Act 2 will showcase “Encounter”- The scene in mortal world is like a profusion of color, where the seventh fairy didn’t know how to tell Dong Yong about her deep love. Dong Yong refused her request of marrying him by various reasons, however, the seventh fairy had already made up her mind to marry him, and she used the white fan to make the pagoda tree talk, and finally they got married. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixAct 3 will showcase “Serving Bond”- The seventh fairy went together with Dong Yong to Squire Fu’s home. Squire Fu didn’t want to adopt the seventh fairy, but had no reasons to refuse, so he said that he can’t support the seventh fairy until she weaves ten bolts of brocade in one night. Act 4 will showcase “Spinning Silk”- Silk like this surely can’t be weaved into brocade, let alone finishing the weaving in one night but the seventh fairy recalled the incense her eldest sister gave her while leaving the heaven. Seventh Fairy lit the incense and the smoke rose into the heaven which made her sisters come and help the seventh fairy in the weaving room, where they united with happy laughter and cheerful voices and finally finished the weaving of ten bolts of brocade before dawn. Act 5 will showcase “Separation”- The three-year contract is finally shortened to a hundred days, and they went back home after fulfilling the hundred-day bond. However, the Jade Emperor made an edict to arrest the seventh fairy who obeyed the rule back to Heaven while they were enjoying their conjugal love and happiness and dreaming of beautiful life in the future. While the deadline of going back to heaven was coming, the seventh fairy had to leave with teary eyes. At farewell, the seventh fairy told Dong Yong, “Heaven rule may separate us, but you and I will always be one” and also made an oath- “When spring arrives next year, I’ll hand you our son under the pagoda tree”.With the arrival of Spring, the seventh fairy borne by the promise she made to Dong Yong in mind, went back to the mortal world again, and gave their baby to Dong Yong under the pagoda tree. NGMAs Nandlal treasures at Venice Biennale

first_imgDirector General of NGMA Adwaita Gadanayak is upbeat about India’s participation at the Venice Biennale. Along with the ministry of Culture, National Gallery Of Modern Art celebrates 150 years of Gandhi in the exposition of the Haripura Posters created by famed artist Nandlal Bose, belonging to the NGMA’s own collections which are indeed National Treasures .In August 2017, NGMA celebrated 70 years of Independence, by hosting an exhibition to awaken our political consciousness which included the historic Haripura Posters that awakened political consciousness at large. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfNationalist spirit and fervour was the signature of Nandlal’s Haripura posters. They also reflect his acute sensitivity to the landscape and village folk around him. Each poster is a validation of vitality and liveliness for more than 70 years after they were created. “Nandalal and his associates produced around 400 posters for the Congress convention at Haripura, held in February 1938,” reflects the Director General. “These posters were all produced on handmade paper with pigments made from local earth and stones, and mounted on straw boards; none were printed or mass-produced,” he affirms. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveSharing the history – “To imagine that they were executed in 1937; commissioned by Gandhi for the Indian National Congress Party meeting in 1938, at Haripura – these are benchmarks in Indian history.” Nandalal Bose looked at cultural idioms and the fabric of the common man when he created images of musicians, iron smith, tailors, even a monk creating pottery, an esraj player, a veena player, or just women doing their chores. One of the finest among these posters is the Bull Fighter. In that poster, the vigour and tenacity of the man and bull are shown through strong, gestural lines and swaths of bright, bold colours. Bull Fighter was prominently displayed at the conference grounds at Haripura. Deceptively simple in appearance and invoking flavour of folk painting the Haripura Posters are amalgamation of the decorative and the calligraphic art with a rare ingenuity as well as personal insignia. “At the Venice Biennale we will display them as independent works of art but history says they were done in order to decorate a temporary township built for the annual session of the Indian National Congress in the remote village of Haripura in early 1938,” adds Gadanayak. According to historical notes by art historian R Siva Kumar, the township was built of local materials and in harmony with the rural surroundings. The decorations were conceived, both in style and idiom, following the same aesthetics and were designed to complement the temporary structures. Sivakumar wrote in an essay that they have to be imagined in their original context as part of a broader design to be fully appreciated. The posters also evoke Gandhian ethics and creativity. Gadanayak as Commissioner of India Pavilion, is proud to be part of the Venice Biennale 2019, one of the finest expositions in the world of contemporary and avant garde art.last_img read more
