Bulldogs win off of Mata’s leg

first_imgWEST COVINA — West Covina High kicker Robert Mata nailed a 42-yard field goal midway through the third quarter to lead the Bulldogs’ football team to a 17-14 win over Division II Paramount. “Mata’s never kicked a field goal that far before,’ head coach Mike Maggiore said. “He never appears to be nervous. He told us he could make it and we believed him.’ The Pirates drove the ball to the Bulldogs’ 26 yard-line late in the fourth quarter after a West Covina fumble, but the drive stalled after a failed 43-yard field goal attempt. Pirates running back Clifford Ross gained nearly 200 yards rushing while scoring two touchdowns but injured himself at the beginning of that drive. The Bulldogs defense played tough in the second half as they shut down the smash-mouth running game of the Pirates.
