New Jersey governor calls for sheriff to resign over racist remarks on Sikh attorney general

first_imgBergen County Sheriffs Office(TRENTON, N.J.) — New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy is calling for one of the state’s sheriffs to step down after the sheriff was purportedly recorded making racist comments about New Jersey Attorney General Gurbir Grewal, who is Sikh American.Bergen County Sheriff Michael Saudino allegedly made multiple controversial remarks in a Jan. 16 conversation that took place after Murphy was inaugurated as governor, the recordings of which were obtained by WNYC.In the recording, Saudino was discussing whether Murphy had made any appointments from Bergen County, according to WNYC. When an undersheriff in the room remarked that Grewal is from Bergen County, Saudino purportedly replied, “He didn’t do that because of Bergen County. He did that because of the turban.”Grewal wears the turban due to his religious beliefs.Saudino also purportedly said in the recordings that when the governor spoke about policing issues such as marijuana and better criminal justice reform, he was telling New Jersey residents that they could “do whatever the f— they want.”“Christ almighty. In other words, let the blacks come in, do whatever the f— they want, smoke their marijuana, do this, do that, and don’t worry about it,” Saudino said. “You know, we’ll tie the hands of cops.”In another recording, Saudino purports to question whether Lt. Gov. Sheila Oliver is gay, asking, “Is she gay? ‘Cause she’s never been married.”Grewal wrote on Twitter that he has developed a “thick skin” after being “called far worse.” But, he described Saudino’s apparent comments about the Black community as “wrong, racist and hurtful” and the comment on Oliver as “inappropriate and homophobic.”The source who provided the recordings to WNYC told the public radio station that they took place inside a county office building after he attended Murphy’s inauguration. Two undersheriffs were also in the room, according to WNYC.The governor said in a statement to ABC News that if it is Saudino speaking in the recording, he should resign.“Without question, the comments made on that recording are appalling, and anyone using racist, homophobic, and hateful language is unfit for public office,” Murphy said in the statement. “If indeed that is Sheriff Saudino’s voice on the recording, he must resign.”Grewal also tweeted that he surmised it was Saudino’s voice after listening to the recording. In a statement, Saudino apologized, saying the remarks “are not representative” of who he is and are “in no way consistent with the manner” in which he has conducted his life personally and professionally, according to NJ.com.“In an effort to repair the damage to the friendships that I have built with these communities I have reached out directly to several respected leaders in the communities I have offended and I have personally offered my apologizes and I have asked for their forgiveness and for their communities’ forgiveness,” he said.Saudino did not mention in the statement whether he is going to step down.A representative for the Bergen County Sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to ABC News’ request for comment.Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco echoed Murphy’s statement, saying that he was “shocked and disappointed to hear these comments” and that he has worked with the sheriff “for years.”“Bergen County’s diversity is our strength and his statements are clearly inconsistent with our values,” Tedesco said in a statement to ABC News. “In the best interest of the public, he should step down.”This isn’t the first time Grewal, the first Sikh in the country to hold office as attorney general, has dealt with racist comments made publicly. In July, he was referred to as “turban man” by two conservative talk radio hosts on “The Dennis & Judy Show” on New Jersey 101.5 radio.Grewal took to Twitter to respond to the radio hosts, saying he told his three daughters to turn off the radio the day they made the remarks.Saudino, an elected official, is serving his third term, according to his biography on the Bergen County Sheriff’s Office website. He became sheriff in 2011, has been working in law enforcement for 41 years, and has lived in Bergen County for 53 years, his biography states.Bergen County is New Jersey’s most populated county, and its sheriff’s office is the largest law enforcement agency in the state, with about 600 employees — all of whom are led by Saudino, according to WNYC. His responsibilities also includes assisting municipal police departments and running the Bergen County Jail, among others, WNYC reported.Copyright © 2018, ABC Radio. Mourinho favourites Lukaku, Matic send Man Utd into semi-finals

first_imgMata took the set-piece himself, which ended with Tim Krul turning Chris Smalling’s shot against the post. Brighton missed a rare chance before the break when Pascal Gross’s corner picked out Dunk, who had lost his marker Scott McTominay, and his powerful effort was well saved by Sergio Romero. However, the visitors started the second half in far more ambitious mode with Gross appearing in dangerous positions to, first, shoot just wide and then see an effort blocked.Jurgen Locadia then forced Romero into a fine save high to his right.Albion were building momentum and should have been level when Locadia headed wastefully wide when unmarked at the back post. That miss was proved costly as United’s efficiency showed when Matic headed home their second goal from just their second shot on target all night.Share on: WhatsApp And seven minutes from time, Matic rose in convincing fashion to meet Ashley Young’s pinpoint free-kick and head in a goal that finally killed off a strong second-half showing from the visitors.Mourinho had used his pre-match press conference on Friday to launch an impassioned defence of his reign as United manager, in which he had hinted broadly that a number of his players had not been performing consistently this season – with only Lukaku and Matic singled out for praise.Coincidentally or not, the United manager left two of his biggest signings, Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez, out of his starting line-up despite the FA Cup being his club’s only hope of silverware this season following the disappointing midweek loss to Sevilla in the Champions League.A flurry of snow before kick-off made sure the game kicked off in difficult conditions, and it was the half-hour mark before Brighton’s defence was remotely troubled when Juan Mata played a series of sharp passes with Anthony Martial to open up a shooting opportunity which was deflected behind for a corner.center_img Manchester, United Kingdom | AFP | Romelu Lukaku and Nemanja Matic, the only two players to escape criticism from manager Jose Mourinho this week, scored the goals that carried Manchester United through to the FA Cup semi-finals with a 2-0 win over Brighton at Old Trafford.Lukaku struck after 37 minutes although his 25th goal of the season owed everything to the delivery by team-mate Matic who sent over a far-post cross which hung invitingly for the Belgian international. As he has so often this season, Lukaku powered past his marker Lewis Dunk before forcing the ball in with a header from almost point-blank range.last_img read more

Belgian forward Eden Hazard joins Real Madrid for Zidane re-build

first_imgShare on: WhatsApp FILE PHOTO: Eden Hazard Madrid, Spain | AFP | Eden Hazard completed his long-awaited move from Chelsea to Real Madrid on Friday and could become the Spanish club’s most expensive signing in their history.Real said Hazard, 28, had signed a five-year contract. His contract at the Premier League club was due to expire next year but the Blues drove a hard bargain for the forward, who will reportedly cost Madrid an initial 100 million euros ($113 million), with another 45 million in potential add-ons.The full amount would trump the 101 million euros Madrid paid Tottenham for Gareth Bale and the 91 million euros they spent to sign Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United. An unveiling at the Santiago Bernabeu is expected next week, once Hazard returns from international duty with Belgium, who play Euro 2020 qualifiers against Kazakhstan on Saturday and Scotland on Tuesday. It means Madrid’s spending spree is picking up pace following the arrivals of defender Eder Militao and striker Luka Jovic from Porto and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively. But Hazard is the gem Zinedine Zidane can build his new team around and brings the kind of stardust Madrid fans have craved ever since the sale of Ronaldo to Juventus last summer.Ronaldo’s departure created a void up front that Madrid failed to fill last season, the team struggling for goals en route to finishing 19 points behind Barcelona in La Liga and crashing out to Ajax in the last 16 of the Champions League.Hazard, who scored 110 goals in seven seasons at Chelsea, will be expected to help plug the gap has long-been admired by Zidane and Madrid president Florentino Perez.“We have wanted to sign Hazard for several years and I hope he will come this year,” Perez told Spanish radio station Onda Cero last month.Less clear is where Hazard will fit into Zidane’s starting line-up. Assuming he plays in his favoured position on the left of a front three, it would mean displacing the 18-year-old Brazilian, Vinicius Junior, who enjoyed a brilliant breakthrough year last season.center_img Chelsea said the club had tried to persuade Hazard to stay.“Although it is with sadness we say goodbye to Eden – and we made it absolutely clear to him the club wished him to stay – we respect the decision he has made to take on a new challenge in a different country and follow his childhood dream of playing for Real Madrid,” Chelsea club director Marina Granovskaia said in a statement.– Bale doubt –Hazard’s arrival also adds more uncertainty around the future of Gareth Bale, who has played both on the left and right of the attacking trio in recent months but is clearly not part of Zidane’s plans.Madrid want to sell Bale to raise money for more signings, with French left-back Ferland Mendy the next player expected to arrive, from Lyon. But the Wales international will not be forced out and has so far shown no interest in the handful of clubs that have shown interest. Neither Bale nor his agent Jonathan Barnett have spoken to the club since the end of the season.Hazard though would do well to match Bale’s record in Madrid as he looks to add to the trophies he won at Chelsea, which included two Premier League and two Europa League titles, as well as one FA Cup and one League Cup.At the end of the 2014-15 season, in which Chelsea won the league, Hazard was awarded both the PFA Players’ Player of the Year and the Premier League Player of the Season. He was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year four times, in 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2017.If Madrid pay the full amount, Chelsea stand to make a profit of more than 100 million euros, having signed Hazard for close to 40 million euros from Lille in 2012.Chelsea had just won the Champions League when Hazard chose them over several other clubs but they have failed to replicate the success in the competition. After reaching the semi-finals in 2014, Chelsea have not gone past the last 16 in the last five seasons.last_img read more

Weekend of close matches in the Western League

first_imgWESTERN BUREAU:Tuff Gong Domino Club eked out a thrilling one-point (300-299) victory over Long Bay in the Charley’s JB Overproof Rum Western Jamaica Domino Premier League on Sunday. The nail-biting finish was one of the closest margins of victory for any club in this season’s competition and showed Tuff Gong’s mettle in staving off the challenge laid down by their opponents.Tuff Gong held a comfortable, but slender seven-point (153-146) lead at the halfway mark, but Long Bay, feeling the love from their supporters, rallied in the early stages of the second half. With the scores equal in the waning moments of the tight match, it was the Tuff Gong pairs who held sway to score a memorable win.Dynasty were also forced to hold on to a single-point victory in their contest with Deeside Untouchables in another enthralling Premier League tie, and it was a similar score in the match-up between Unity Strikers and Strike Force.Western Strikers defeated Rainbow by a nine-point margin (300-291), while Tornado wasted little time to blow away Dallas 300-272 in Division One action, while Uptown eased past Cool Wave 300-280 in their encounter.Matches across all three divisions will resume on Sunday, with matches slated for a 1 p.m. start.last_img read more

Sierra Leone acquits football chiefs after corruption trial

first_img0Shares0000Ex-SLFA president Isha Johansen, a leading women’s football entrepreneur, and former general secretary Chris Kamara had faced an array of charges for misappropriation of funds.FREETOWN, Sierra Leone, May 27 – Two former heads of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA) were cleared of corruption charges on Monday after a high-profile case that led to a bustup with FIFA.Ex-SLFA president Isha Johansen, a leading women’s football entrepreneur, and former general secretary Chris Kamara had faced an array of charges for misappropriation of funds. They were replaced in their jobs as the case went ahead — a move that in October prompted the world’s governing body to suspend the SFLA from its ranks on the grounds of government interference.Sierra Leone’s qualifying matches for the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations were scrapped. The Confederation of African Football (CAF) then disqualified the country from the qualifying campaign for the tournament, which takes place next month in Egypt.“Isha Johansen and Chris Kamara are acquitted and discharged on all count charges,” Justice Reginald Fynn announced after delivering an hour-long judgment in a jam-packed court in Freetown, the capital. The pair shed tears of joy and hugged lawyers as thunderous applause erupted.“Thanks to God, we are free at last,” Kamara said, punching the air with his fist. The defendants were arrested in September 2016 and were then released on bail before being charged on 11 counts in September 2017.The counts included four primary allegations, of misappropriation of donor funds, conspiracy to commit a corruption offence, misappropriation of public funds and abuse of office.Alleged misdeeds included the disappearance of $50,000 (44,500 euros) donated by CAF for MRI magnetic resonance imaging tests, and a $5,000 loan from Isha’s husband who signed a sponsorship deal with the national team. The pair had denied any wrongdoing.“We lost, now is time to take deep breath and review the judgment for next steps,” Sierra Leone’s anti-corruption commissioner, Francis Ben Kaifala, said on Twitter.“That is what due process is,” he said. He did not reveal if there were any plans for an appeal.FIFA’s suspensions spurred government anger and a political emergency for the newly-elected president, Julius Maada Bio.According to Sierra Leone law, any public official under investigation must step aside pending the outcome of the probe. The SLFA has a long history of crises linked to match-fixing allegations, corruption and poor leadership.Fifteen Sierra Leonean players and officials were suspended in July 2014 over suspect matches including a 2010 World Cup qualifier against South Africa.“I’m happy the corruption case in football is over, FIFA can now remove our suspension,” football fan Mohamed Bangura told AFP in Freetown.FIFA has said its suspension will be lifted “once the SLFA and its recognised leadership… have confirmed to FIFA that the SLFA administration, premises, accounts and communication channels are under their control once again.”Johansen, a 54-year-old entrepreneur, is the first woman to lead the SLFA. She owns her own football club, FC Johansen.0Shares0000(Visited 1 times, 1 visits today)last_img read more

National Register of Citizens: Assam minorities bombarded with re-verification notices

first_img Sachetan Nagarik Mancha, a group that has been demanding re-verification of 20% NRC applicants in districts bordering Bangladesh and 10% in other districts, have also criticised Mr. Hajela for a different reason.“During the July 23 hearing, Mr. Hajela said 27% applicants in the draft NRC have already been reverified. “He should reveal the process for carrying out the automatic re-verification, who he informed about it, and whether he issued a public notice about it. He should reveal these because a faulty NRC could pose a threat to the safety of Assam and India,” Mancha president Chandan Bhattacharya said. Anwar Hussain was surprised to receive a notice from the Local Registrar of Citizen Registration (LRCR) of the Goroimari Revenue Block on Saturday. The notice gave him less than 48 hours to appear, with all members of his family, for re-verification of their citizenship documents at the Golaghat North Development Block office in Golaghat district’s Dergaon, about 330 km west of his village Kanahara in Kamrup district. They were asked to report at 9 a.m. sharp on Monday.“I somehow managed to hire a 22-seater bus for my family and a few others. The vehicle alone will cost me ₹18,000,” said the 33-year-old Mr. Hussain, vice-principal of the Al-Amin Islamic Model School, before leaving for Dergaon in eastern Assam late on Sunday. He was not the only one in Kanahara; 148 others had received a similar notice. By Saturday afternoon, about 50% of the people in most Muslim-dominated villages, such as Goroimari, Sontoli, Kalatoli, Topamari and Maligari, in Kamrup district had received the notice — almost simultaneously. Not left out“All those who were asked to get their documents reverified are included in the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) published on July 30, 2018. They are not among the 40.07 lakh and 1.02 lakh put on the two lists of people excluded from the NRC,” Kanahara village leader Muksed Ali Choudhury told The Hindu.“The notices have been a bolt from the blue. Most people like Jamir Ali, Jahanara Khatun, Aamir Ali are daily-wagers and unable to get vehicles to centres 300-500 km away at such short notice. They fear they will be excluded from NRC if they cannot turn up at the specified place in time,” Mr. Choudhury said. Also Read Assam’s NRC exercise: The registry test of citizenship  There were reports of similar notices served in minority areas of districts such as Barpeta, Goalpara, Dhubri, Morigaon and Karimganj.‘SC snubbed’The Brahmaputra Valley Civil Society (BVCS), a group of academicians, retired bureaucrats, lawyers and professionals, said the notices cited The Citizenship (Registration of Citizens and Issue National Identity Cards) Rules 2003.“But the rules, as amended in 2009, and the Standard Operating Procedure that the Centre came up with for the NRC exercise say that a person has to be given at least 15 days to appear for a hearing. In a sudden bombardment of notices on August 3, people have been asked to go to faraway places for hearings on August 5, 6 and 7,” senior advocate H.R.A. Choudhury said. Also Read Assam NRC: SC questions need for sample reverification  “The LRCRs and NRC authorities have also snubbed the Supreme Court, which on April 10 ordered that a person should be called for hearing to a centre within a convenient distance in the same district. The notices have also violated the SC ruling on July 23 against the government’s plea for re-verification after NRC State Coordinator Prateek Hajela said 27% re-verification has already been done,” Mr. Choudhury said.Under fireBVCS president Atowar Rahman said the notices have been served in mostly Muslim areas two days after the State government disclosed district-wise data on NRC inclusions and exclusions in the State Assembly. “We wonder if Mr. Hajela is under pressure from the government to have these notices served, or his office has done it voluntarily,” he said.Mr. Hajela could not be contacted. Other NRC officials cited the Supreme Court’s gag order. Also Read Supreme Court extends Assam NRC final publication deadline to August 31last_img read more
