Philippines president rejects calls for igaming ban

first_img Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte has announced that he will not bow to pressure from China to ban online gaming in the country.Speaking at a news conference upon his return from a five-day official visit to China, during which he met the country’s President Xi Jinping, Duterte said banning Philippines Offshore Gambling Operators (POGOs) would result in job losses. He said that he listened to the request from Xi during their meeting, but stressed that the final decision on a ban rested with him.“I decide that we need it,” Duterte said. “Many [would] lose their jobs. Anyway, it’s government-controlled.”
However, he also issued a strict warning to illegal operators active in the country, and warned POGOs not to dupe the government by not paying taxes, as the only reason they were permitted was to create jobs.“There’s not much work [in the Philippines],” he explained. “If we have progressed as a country, and had many jobs then you wouldn’t have this stupid thing.”“But at this time, I really couldn’t do anything. Many are hungry. […] Just don’t fool the government. Don’t fool me.”Pressure on southeast Asian nations from China to ban online gambling has been growing in recent months, prompting the Philippines gambling regulator Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to put a halt to the issuing of new offshore gaming licences. This was welcomed by China, which then called for a total ban through Foreign Ministry spokesman Geng Shuang. It claims that offshore operators are illegally targeting players in China and cheating them out of money. It also alleges that these operators are effectively enslaving Chinese employees.Cambodia also issued a moratorium on new licences, before announcing a total shut-down of its online industry earlier this week. However the Philippines has proved more resistant to China’s demands. It has sought to play down the impact of POGOs, and the country’s ambassador to China Jose Santiago ‘Chito’ Sta. Romana said that any decision on a ban would be taken by Duterte, not Xi, ahead of the Presidents’ meeting. SportPesa maintains all well as second sponsorship deal ends

first_img Sports betting operator SportPesa’s sponsorship with Formula One team Racing Point has come to an end, with the operator and team offering different explanations of why the deal ended. Finance Regions: Africa UK & Ireland East Africa Kenya AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to LinkedInLinkedInShare to FacebookFacebookShare to TwitterTwitter Email Address Sports betting operator SportPesa’s sponsorship with Formula One team Racing Point has come to an end, with the operator and team offering different explanations of why the deal ended.SportPesa was named the title sponsor of Racing Point in 2019, with the operator’s branding also featuring prominently on the livery of its racecar. For the 2020 season, however, water treatment company BWT has taken over the title sponsor role, while SportPesa imagery no longer appears on the Racing Point car. While Racing Point chief executive Otmar Szafnauer said the SportPesa deal ended due to “difficulties in their home market” of Kenya, SportPesa told iGamingBusiness.com that the agreement was simply a 12-month deal that had some to an end.“SportPesa’s commercial relationship with Racing Point has concluded at the end of the initial 12-month agreement between us,” SportPesa said. “We would like to thank Racing Point for partnering with us and we wish them and their new sponsor every success for future F1 seasons.”When the sponsorship was originally announced, however, SportPesa described it as a “multi-year deal” in a press release.Yesterday, Premier League football club Everton ended its agreement with SportPesa two years before the shirt sponsorship deal had been due to expire. The operator said this decision had been mutual.“Following the statement released last night by Everton FC, SportPesa can confirm that its commercial arrangement with the club will conclude by mutual agreement at the end of the current season after a successful partnership,” SportPesa said. “We would like to thank Everton FC for their support, in particular for their valued input on an array of charitable projects in Africa.“We understand that this agreement allows Everton to pursue a variety of other commercial arrangements for next season, which we note they are already doing.”While the mutual termination of the Everton deal – reportedly worth £7m a year – led to suggestions that the operator’s finances played a part, this was denied by a a source close to the matter. The source added that the ending of the Racing Point and Everton deals were not related. The decision comes following a difficult 2019 for SportPesa, which in September of last year announced that it was to halt operations in its native Kenya over a dispute related to a tax on betting stakes.Shortly after this, SportPesa also announced it had made 453 Kenyan employees redundant after closing its operations in the country, calling for authorities in the country to repeal the new tax rate that caused it to withdraw from the market. However, in November 2019, the Kenyan Tax Appeals Tribunal ruled in favour of betting operators that challenged whether the controversial gambling tax should be levied on player winnings, rather than their original stakes. In its ruling, the court determined that the tax could only be applied to a player’s winnings at the end of every month, and that the KRA must collect revenue from customers, rather than directly from operators. While it appeared the decision could pave the way for local operators such as SportPesa to return to the Kenya, it remains inactive in its home market three months later.Image: Lukas Raich (Creative Commons)center_img Topics: Finance Marketing & affiliates Sports betting Subscribe to the iGaming newsletter SportPesa maintains all well as second sponsorship deal ends 18th February 2020 | By Daniel O’Boylelast_img read more

A wrestler from his village took his to Kolhapur for better training facilities. He would run errands for the senior wrestler, cook food for him, wash clothes for the only incentive of getting better exposure, training, food and a little pocket money. As the destiny had it, the senior wrestler decided quit the sport four years later. Since, the family were not able to support him financially the promising talent was compelled to return to his village home. “I had no other option than to return home. There was no source of income and the family did not have funds to start any business. Since, I had no means of continuing wrestling I decided to support the family financially. I bought a Tata Ace mini-truck with a ₹ 1.5 lakh bank loan. Since, I was too young to get a driver’s license I would only drive my Tata Ace in and around the village. I knew it were not right to drive a vehicle without a license. But there was no other option. That one dare brought me back to wrestling,” reveals Gongane. Also Read: World Wrestling Clubs Cup: 20 member Indian team announced, Baliyan, Halakurki in the squad“One of my friends was a sportswear trader. In 2012, he asked me to get his consignment from Delhi. I readily agreed. Going to the National Capital meant a lot for village boys like me. That one trip to Delhi brought me back to my first love – wrestling. En route to Delhi we stayed at an akhara (wrestling club) in Pune. I shared my love for the sport with one of the wrestlers there. He offered to take care of my stay and food. But, I had to give him massage, cook his food. I was yet again doing all that after four years – cooking, practicing and running errands for the man who was supporting me pursue my dream.”In a year’s time, Tanajee Gongane was a national cadet medallist in 2013. He did not stop thereafter, until the impressive run was briefly halted by an injury in 2016. Fearing that recovery and return to the mat might not be easy, he joined India Army for livelihood. But soon started representing Services Sports Promotion Board. Within a year, he was a senior national medallist and also earned a place in Wrestling Federation of India’s national camp. The wheel of fortune had turned a full circle for Gongane. His wrestling career for a second time was getting the much-needed drive from the Tata Motors Commercial Vehicle Division. This time, for India’s leading commercial vehicle brand being the Principal Sponsor of the Wrestling Federation of India. “But for Tata Ace, I might not have been the wrestler I am today and now I aim to realise my Olympic dream with the support of WFI and Tata Motors. And  symbolises the essence of Tata Motors’ vision for the sport of wrestling – enabling each wrestler to achieve their fullest potential . This is yet another story to celebrate for the Tata Ace family of  entrepreneurs.“Tata Ace is a true example of how a small investment backed by a little commitment, vision and big dream fructifies into a successful entrepreneurship.”Gongane, who idealises Bajrang Punia, now aims to compete in the 65 kg category.
