first_imgJuly 23, 2018During the third weekend of July we had the pleasure hosting two back-to-back musical performances at Arcosanti. The first show featured the Tucson based artist Katie Haverly and the Aviary, her accompanying band. The performance took place on Friday the 20th in the amphitheater and was attended by an intimate audience of residents, overnight guests, and fans who made the drive up from Phoenix. Arcosanti house band Monsoon kicked off the evening, warming up the crowd up with new songs and beloved covers.Haverly’s line up featured a diverse set of songs, ranging in style from light weight lounge singer jazzy to rocked up singer-songwriter standards. Those who stuck around through Saturday evening saw the return of Walter Parks to our site, this time for a concert in the vaults. Walter’s first visit to the site was on tour with Richie Havens in 2001. Since then he has made many trips back, playing or on his own or with his regular band Swamp Cabbage .On this occasion his performance took the form of a one man solo show. Parks’ style is hard to define–Southern rock, blues, soul, and Appalacian music all blend together into a distinct “swap rock” sound that was felt right at home under the stars with bats flying overhead and goat frogs singing a chorus nearby. His final song, a haunting rendition of “Amazing Grace” was performed in honor of his father, an architect who never got to see Arcosanti in person. We’re always adding things into the mix; to stay up to date about events and happenings at Arcosanti come back and check our website often.(photos by Jesse Fernandez, text by Tim Bell)last_img
