Quantum teleportation performed with light from a quantum dot embedded in an LED Here, researchers focus on semiconductor quantum dots containing as few as a thousand atoms of a semiconducting element, such as silicon, and having diameters as small as one nanometer. They are often referred to as “artificial atoms” because their behavior can be quite similar to a single atom. For example, a semiconductor quantum dot’s electrons can be confined in a way similar to how a single atom’s electrons are bound. Therefore, a quantum dot can be described by a single quantum state, despite consisting of hundreds or thousands of atoms.Researchers Leong Chuan Kwek and K.W. Choo of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore modeled a teleportation system consisting of two quantum dots. They first investigated how the fidelity of the teleportation process would be affected by quantum “entanglement” – when two or more quantum states have to be described with reference to each other, even when spatially separated. The model revealed that the entanglement of the dots is proportional to the fidelity: as one increases, the other increases. Kwek and Choo then developed general equations that would yield a suitable magnetic field, dot-to-dot distance, and temperature (which would all depend on the size of the dots and other variables) such that the fidelity of the system would be better than the average fidelity of non-quantum communications.“Our work provides some preliminary estimates on the way self-assembled quantum dots might be fabricated in terms of inter-dot distances for experiments at room temperature,” Kwek told PhysOrg.com.He and Choo also studied how the system would handle “decoherence,” the often unavoidable interaction of a quantum system with its environment, which compromises the transfer process. Decoherence is one major issue facing quantum computing. Two decoherence models show, however, that the quantum-dot system could still function under a moderate amount of decoherence. Finally, the researchers used the model to study a quantum-state transfer or swapping of states between two quantum dots, an ability necessary for quantum information processing. They determined that a “perfect” transfer is possible using a quantum-dot teleportation system, meaning that the transferred quantum state is exactly the same as the initial quantum state of the first dot.Citation: K.W. Teleportation is one facet of quantum information science, a developing field that could have a major impact on computing and communications. Explore furtherlast_img read more

NHTSA looking to implement new noise enhancement rules for electric vehicles

first_img Citation: NHTSA looking to implement new noise enhancement rules for electric vehicles (2011, July 13) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2011-07-nhtsa-noise-electric-vehicles.html The legislation has come about as a result of two studies that indicated that pedestrians might be at increased risk of being run over by electric vehicles. The first, conducted in 2008 by Lawrence Rosenblum, a University of California perceptual psychologist, showed that subjects wearing blindfolds were able to hear a Honda Accord with a gas engine approaching from as far away as 36 feet, but were only able to hear a Toyota Prius (hybrid) when it drew as near as 11 feet.In the other study, done by the NHTSA itself, research indicated that there was a higher percentage rate for electric vehicles running into pedestrians, than gas powered models. And while some may debate the accuracy of the research (the NHTSA study used data from just 12 states and only for one year) or the degree to which electric vehicles actually pose a risk, the bottom line, is that new regulations are very likely going to be implemented, a draft standard will be issued in 2012, with the new rules going into effect in 2015. Thus, the issue now is just what sort of “noise” will the car manufacturers be required to add. Some, such as the Nissan Leaf, already make a sort of whoosh sound, and Ford is opting for a crowd sourced option that will hopefully come up with a sound that the majority of electric vehicle owners won’t hate. All this might be moot however if the NHTSA picks a noise on its own. Also an issue is whether such cars would be required to make the noise all the time, or just during slow driving when it more likely matters. They could also decide to add different noises for different activities, such as when a vehicle is moving in reverse or turning, a likely possibility since the legislation spurring them to action in the first place also applies to light and low-speed vehicles, motorcycles, buses, and heavy-duty trucks. Add engine noise, say human factors researchers © 2010 PhysOrg.com (PhysOrg.com) — The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced on July 7, that it plans to implement new regulations requiring electric vehicles to emit some as yet undesignated “noise” to warn pedestrians of its approach. This move comes on the heels of passage, by Congress, of the Pedestrian Safety Enhancement Act of 2010, which requires the NHTSA to take action to protect pedestrians from the nearly noiseless electric (and hybrid) vehicles that lawmakers believe pose a hazard to unsuspecting people crossing roads, especially those with hearing impairments. Researchers refute idea that Neanderthals drove mammoths over cliff in Jersey

first_img Today, Jersey is a British Crown dependency—an island off the coast of Normandy. But 200,000 years ago, ocean levels were lower—so low that parts of the site, now known as LaCotte de St Brelade were above the water line. To get a better handle on how the mass of bones wound up at the sight, the researchers obtained a survey of the seabed as it stretches away from the cliff. In analyzing the terrain, the researchers noted that in order for mammoths or other beasts to be driven over the cliff, they would have first had to have been driven down into a dip, then back up again before arriving at the edge of the cliff—the terrain itself would have been very rocky as well, suggesting that a herd of mammoths would have dispersed long before reaching the cliff, and thus could not have all plunged to their deaths together. The researchers also noted that some of the excavated bones near the bottom of the pile showed signs of being burnt, which suggests the bones were used by the Neanderthals after death. The researchers contend that rather than driving the mammoths over the cliff en masse, they instead hunted them individually and carried their bones to the site where they were found—to eat the meat off them, and to use the bones for burning or other purposes. Many other Neanderthal artifacts have been found at the site, suggesting it’s a place where they lived on and off for many years, before finally moving away as the climate grew too cold for them. Excavations at La Cotte de St Brelade in the 1960s and 1970s uncovered heaps of mammoth bones, interpreted as evidence of intentional hunting drives. New study of this Middle Palaeolithic coastal site, however, indicates a very different landscape to the featureless coastal plain that was previously envisaged. Reconsideration of the bone heaps themselves further undermines the ‘mass kill’ hypothesis, suggesting that these were simply the final accumulations of bone at the site, undisturbed and preserved in situ when the return to a cold climate blanketed them in wind-blown loess.center_img The Reconstruction of the Funeral of Homo neanderthalensis. Captured in the Hannover Zoo. (Via Wikipedia) (Phys.org) —For half a century, archaeologists have been puzzling over a mass of woolly rhino and mammoth bones found at the base of a cliff on the island of Jersey in the English Channel—most have assumed they were the result of a mass execution by Neanderthals driving them over the cliff. Now a new team of British researchers has found evidence to suggest the bones were carried there instead. In their paper published in the journal Antiquity, the researchers claim their investigation shows that it would have been nearly impossible for Neanderthals to drive them to the cliff, much less get them to run off of it. Researchers find a way to improve FELs approach used to study Photosystem

Credit: Nature (2014) doi:10.1038/nature13991 Scientists have been studying plants for quite some time trying to understand how photosynthesis works, and while they have made a great deal of progress, there are still some parts that aren’t completely understood, one of those is Photosystem II, the initial reaction in photosynthesis, where a plant uses energy from light to split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen atoms. The problem lies in catching the plant mechanism in action and taking a picture of it. Scientists have used lasers in the past, but that causes damage to the plant parts being studied. More recently, X-ray free electron lasers (FELs) have been developed that allow for a technique called serial femtosecond crystallography—where a sample is exposed to a small X-ray pulse, over and over, resulting in the creation of an image that can be used for study. But, it still doesn’t allow for the high resolution (because of diffraction issues) scientists really want. In this new effort, the researchers have taken the FELs approach a step further and in so doing have come up with a way to create the high resolution images scientists have been hoping for.The team brought with them expertise in dehydration techniques that allow for slow, controlled large crystal growth—adding such a process to the FELs approach allowed for creating very high resolution images of Photosystem II (in its dark resting state) for the first time. Schlichting notes that because the team used large crystals, the technique also allows for using more than one diffraction pattern by moving the sample around, thus giving researchers more views. In addition to helping to learn more about how plants use the sun’s energy to perform photosynthesis, scientists may be able to use the new technique to develop better man-made versions of the OEC to hopefully offer a new type of solar cell that will finally get us off burning fossil fuels. More information: Native structure of photosystem II at 1.95 Å resolution viewed by femtosecond X-ray pulses, Nature (2014) DOI: 10.1038/nature13991AbstractPhotosynthesis converts light energy into biologically useful chemical energy vital to life on Earth. The initial reaction of photosynthesis takes place in photosystem II (PSII), a 700-kilodalton homodimeric membrane protein complex that catalyses photo-oxidation of water into dioxygen through an S-state cycle of the oxygen evolving complex (OEC). The structure of PSII has been solved by X-ray diffraction (XRD) at 1.9 ångström resolution, which revealed that the OEC is a Mn4CaO5-cluster coordinated by a well defined protein environment1. However, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies showed that the manganese cations in the OEC are easily reduced by X-ray irradiation2, and slight differences were found in the Mn–Mn distances determined by XRD1, EXAFS and theoretical studies. Here we report a ‘radiation-damage-free’ structure of PSII from Thermosynechococcus vulcanus in the S1 state at a resolution of 1.95 ångströms using femtosecond X-ray pulses of the SPring-8 ångström compact free-electron laser (SACLA) and hundreds of large, highly isomorphous PSII crystals. Compared with the structure from XRD, the OEC in the X-ray free electron laser structure has Mn–Mn distances that are shorter by 0.1–0.2 ångströms. The valences of each manganese atom were tentatively assigned as Mn1D(III), Mn2C(IV), Mn3B(IV) and Mn4A(III), based on the average Mn–ligand distances and analysis of the Jahn–Teller axis on Mn(III). One of the oxo-bridged oxygens, O5, has significantly longer distances to Mn than do the other oxo-oxygen atoms, suggesting that O5 is a hydroxide ion instead of a normal oxygen dianion and therefore may serve as one of the substrate oxygen atoms. These findings provide a structural basis for the mechanism of oxygen evolution, and we expect that this structure will provide a blueprint for the design of artificial catalysts for water oxidation.center_img Journal information: Nature A team of researchers in Japan has developed a technique for improving the free electron lasers (FELs) approach to studying Photosystem II that allows for creating high-resolution images of the oxygen evolving complex (OEC) in plants. In their paper published in the journal Nature, the team describes their new technique and how their work might lead to a better understanding of the entire photosynthesis process. Domesticated wild dog mothers found unwilling to share meat with offspring

first_img Explore further (Phys.org)—A small team of researchers with the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research has found that street dog mothers are not as willing to share meat with their pups as they are with other sources of food. In their paper published in Royal Society Open Science, the team describes experiments they carried out with semi-feral dogs, what they learned and why they believe their experiments offer evidence that suggests that dog domestication was more likely related to dog ancestors joining human civilizations than humans adopting wild puppies. This document is subject to copyright. Apart from any fair dealing for the purpose of private study or research, no part may be reproduced without the written permission. The content is provided for information purposes only. First finding of crossbreeding between dogs and golden jackal confirmed Credit: Noël Zia Lee, Wikimedia Commons In India, domesticated dogs are allowed to live freely in towns and cities among human inhabitants—they don’t belong to anyone, instead, they live out their lives as semi-feral canines, existing on scraps, garbage or hand-outs. As the researchers note, very little research has been conducted on these street dogs, thus very little is known about their history or habits. After observing a mother with older pups refusing to share a bit of meat with her offspring, the researchers set up some experiments to learn if it was a common behavior or a onetime situation. The experiments consisted of offering food to a mother who still had pups traveling with her, but whose pups were all old enough to have been weaned. In the first experiment, the researchers tossed biscuits to 15 mother/litter groups and observed how they behaved, noting particularly how willing the mother was to share with her offspring. In the second set of experiments, they tossed pieces of raw chicken to 16 different mother/litter groups and once again watched to see how they behaved. In studying their data, the researchers found that during the biscuit experiments, the mothers were generally willing to share with their offspring—they did so freely approximately 75 percent of the time. When meat was doled out, however, things changed dramatically, there were conflicts approximately 80 percent of the time, straight away.Anyone who has ever owned a dog knows that meat is of particular importance to them, while they are able to digest carbohydrates, they still crave the protein in meat, as the mothers in the experiments in India showed. The researchers believe that craving for protein might have led the ancestors of modern dogs to hang around human settlements, which eventually led to full domestication, which suggests of course that such domestication was not due to humans adopting puppies, as has become the conventional view.center_img Journal information: Royal Society Open Science © 2015 Phys.org Citation: Domesticated ‘wild’ dog mothers found unwilling to share meat with offspring (2015, December 9) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2015-12-domesticated-wild-dog-mothers-unwilling.html More information: Selfish mothers indeed! Resource-dependent conflict over extended parental care in free-ranging dogs, Royal Society Open Science, Published 9 December 2015.DOI: 10.1098/rsos.150580 , http://rsos.royalsocietypublishing.org/content/2/12/150580AbstractParent–offspring conflict (POC) theory provides an interesting premise for understanding social dynamics in facultatively social species. In free-ranging dogs, mothers increase conflict over extended parental care with their pups beyond the weaning stage. In this study, we investigated whether resource quality affects POC in the dogs that typically live in a highly competitive environment as scavengers. We built a theoretical model to predict the alternative options available to the mother in the context of food sharing with her pups when protein-rich food (meat) is provided, as compared to carbohydrate-rich food (biscuits). We fit the mothers’ response from experimental data to the model and show that the mothers choose a selfish strategy, which can in turn ensure higher lifetime reproductive success, while depriving the current litter access to better resources. These results have interesting implications for understanding the social dynamics of the dogs, and the emergence of facultative sociality in a species that evolved from strongly social ancestors. We speculate that the tendency of increased conflict in resource-rich conditions might have driven the process of domestication in the ancestors of dogs which defected from their groups in favour of richer resources around human settlements.last_img read more

The event will be programmed by Anhui Huangmei Opera Theatre, China. The main aim of this cultural evening is to present a slice of Chinese culture to the Opera lovers in India, and to encourage Indian tourists to visit China. Huangmei Opera has grown into a famous opera enjoying a good reputation from folk drama. It mainly narrates a beautiful love story between immortal and mortal.   Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’Act 1 will showcase “The Magpie Bridge”- Rules are heavy and time is dreary in heaven, where the seven fairies came to the magpie bridge to have a peep on mortal word while their father, the Jade Emperor was busy. Act 2 will showcase “Encounter”- The scene in mortal world is like a profusion of color, where the seventh fairy didn’t know how to tell Dong Yong about her deep love. Dong Yong refused her request of marrying him by various reasons, however, the seventh fairy had already made up her mind to marry him, and she used the white fan to make the pagoda tree talk, and finally they got married. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixAct 3 will showcase “Serving Bond”- The seventh fairy went together with Dong Yong to Squire Fu’s home. Squire Fu didn’t want to adopt the seventh fairy, but had no reasons to refuse, so he said that he can’t support the seventh fairy until she weaves ten bolts of brocade in one night. Act 4 will showcase “Spinning Silk”- Silk like this surely can’t be weaved into brocade, let alone finishing the weaving in one night but the seventh fairy recalled the incense her eldest sister gave her while leaving the heaven. Seventh Fairy lit the incense and the smoke rose into the heaven which made her sisters come and help the seventh fairy in the weaving room, where they united with happy laughter and cheerful voices and finally finished the weaving of ten bolts of brocade before dawn. Act 5 will showcase “Separation”- The three-year contract is finally shortened to a hundred days, and they went back home after fulfilling the hundred-day bond. However, the Jade Emperor made an edict to arrest the seventh fairy who obeyed the rule back to Heaven while they were enjoying their conjugal love and happiness and dreaming of beautiful life in the future. While the deadline of going back to heaven was coming, the seventh fairy had to leave with teary eyes. At farewell, the seventh fairy told Dong Yong, “Heaven rule may separate us, but you and I will always be one” and also made an oath- “When spring arrives next year, I’ll hand you our son under the pagoda tree”.With the arrival of Spring, the seventh fairy borne by the promise she made to Dong Yong in mind, went back to the mortal world again, and gave their baby to Dong Yong under the pagoda tree. NGMAs Nandlal treasures at Venice Biennale

first_imgDirector General of NGMA Adwaita Gadanayak is upbeat about India’s participation at the Venice Biennale. Along with the ministry of Culture, National Gallery Of Modern Art celebrates 150 years of Gandhi in the exposition of the Haripura Posters created by famed artist Nandlal Bose, belonging to the NGMA’s own collections which are indeed National Treasures .In August 2017, NGMA celebrated 70 years of Independence, by hosting an exhibition to awaken our political consciousness which included the historic Haripura Posters that awakened political consciousness at large. Also Read – Add new books to your shelfNationalist spirit and fervour was the signature of Nandlal’s Haripura posters. They also reflect his acute sensitivity to the landscape and village folk around him. Each poster is a validation of vitality and liveliness for more than 70 years after they were created. “Nandalal and his associates produced around 400 posters for the Congress convention at Haripura, held in February 1938,” reflects the Director General. “These posters were all produced on handmade paper with pigments made from local earth and stones, and mounted on straw boards; none were printed or mass-produced,” he affirms. Also Read – Over 2 hours screen time daily will make your kids impulsiveSharing the history – “To imagine that they were executed in 1937; commissioned by Gandhi for the Indian National Congress Party meeting in 1938, at Haripura – these are benchmarks in Indian history.” Nandalal Bose looked at cultural idioms and the fabric of the common man when he created images of musicians, iron smith, tailors, even a monk creating pottery, an esraj player, a veena player, or just women doing their chores. One of the finest among these posters is the Bull Fighter. In that poster, the vigour and tenacity of the man and bull are shown through strong, gestural lines and swaths of bright, bold colours. Bull Fighter was prominently displayed at the conference grounds at Haripura. Deceptively simple in appearance and invoking flavour of folk painting the Haripura Posters are amalgamation of the decorative and the calligraphic art with a rare ingenuity as well as personal insignia. “At the Venice Biennale we will display them as independent works of art but history says they were done in order to decorate a temporary township built for the annual session of the Indian National Congress in the remote village of Haripura in early 1938,” adds Gadanayak. According to historical notes by art historian R Siva Kumar, the township was built of local materials and in harmony with the rural surroundings. The decorations were conceived, both in style and idiom, following the same aesthetics and were designed to complement the temporary structures. Sivakumar wrote in an essay that they have to be imagined in their original context as part of a broader design to be fully appreciated. The posters also evoke Gandhian ethics and creativity. Gadanayak as Commissioner of India Pavilion, is proud to be part of the Venice Biennale 2019, one of the finest expositions in the world of contemporary and avant garde art.last_img read more

Rest in Vinyl – A Company Will Press Your Ashes into a

first_imgDavid Bowie released Ashes to Ashes on vinyl in 1980. Though the Thin White Duke was ahead of his time, even he couldn’t have foreseen how prophetic the release was… a radical way of treasuring departed loved ones is proof of this. Should someone be musically inclined, or just want to be remembered in style, then there’s a quirky option which ensures their remains are not only seen but heard. If you have the money you can press your ashes into a vinyl record, at the rate of a teaspoonful per disc. The company providing this offbeat service is And Vinyly. It was formed in the Noughties by music producer Jason Leach from Scarborough, England.Bowie during the Ziggy Stardust Tour from 1972–73. Photo by Rik Walton CC BY-SA 2.0A combination of family accidents involving “cremains”, a sense of his own advancing years (he’s middle-aged) and his mother working in a funeral home helped Leach come to the conclusion that vinyl was the answer.“It was not intended to be a business,” he told the BBC in 2017. “It was the result of having a bit of fun with what at the time felt like a shocking and disconcerting inevitability.”As the name suggests, And Vinyly takes a light-hearted approach to the Grim Reaper. Their slogan is “Live on from beyond the groove!”Manufacturing vinyl records in 1959Back in 2010, Wired described the business of manufacturing the discs, which “involves a very understanding pressing plant.”The remains “must be sprinkled onto the raw piece of vinyl (known as a ‘biscuit’ or ‘puck’) before it is pressed by the plates. This means that when the plates exert their pressure on the vinyl in order to create the grooves, the ashes are pressed into the record.”It isn’t a flawless procedure and the ashes can make their presence felt on the recording as the needle moves over them. But for Leach it’s all part of the magic. He said in his BBC interview “There will, of course, be some extra pops and crackles resulting from the inclusion of ashes — but we like these, as this is you.”Vintage black and white photo from the sixties of a young woman looking at vinyl records. The content of the 7 – 12-inch can range from the standard greatest hits, specially-composed tracks, audio of the deceased person’s voice, or even just plain silence so families can really hear their loved ones crackle!Like any kind of end of life arrangement, the price tag isn’t cheap. The minimum cost is £900 ($1,160) and with luxury features such as RIV artwork, the price can rise to around £3,500 (about $4,600).“There will, of course, be some extra pops and crackles resulting from the inclusion of ashes — but we like these, as this is you.”What is RIV artwork? It stands for “Rest In Vinyl” and involves having a portrait of the formerly-breathing client painted by James Hague of the National Portrait Gallery. The ashes are blended with the paint so it becomes a rendering of the subject in every sense.Should a customer wish to remember their pet as a vinyl treasure, the company are agreeable to that also.Mental Floss wrote that Leach had found “a major untapped market in people who aren’t content with standard afterlife traditions.” This extends beyond vinyl grooves and into all manner of commemorative areas. There is a growing trend for non-traditional ways of paying tribute to our loved ones.Ashes can be turned into other desirable items, such as diamonds, or pottery. Gone are the days when remains would be scattered across the ocean with a prayer against windy weather.Businesses like And Vinyly are breaking from the norm to create a loving tribute that could last forever. For Leach, a key part of the enterprise is a legacy.Read another story from us: The Contents of Queen Victoria’s Coffin Showed Her True Love for Prince Albert“This is about as close to time travel as I’m going to get,” he said to the BBC. Gottlieb Cavs would be better off with DeAndre Jordan than their deadline

first_imgDoug Gottlieb in for Colin:Cavs would be better off with DeAndre Jordan than their deadline haulThe Cavs and GM Koby Altman have drawn rave reviews around the NBA for their trade deadline roster reformation, but Doug thinks that a deal for DeAndre Jordan that reportedly fell apart at the last minute would have been them better in the postseason. He believes the Cavs added bench help and more balance with their acquisitions, but Jordan would have been a formidable force as a defender and rim protector against the Warriors and other top teams from in the West in the playoffs. Most people think Cleveland hit a deadline home run. Doug sees a missed opportunity. Regular season struggles are no reason to panic about the WarriorsThe Warriors have struggled to the finish of the first half of the NBA season. Colin Kyrie Irving is officially injury prone

first_img Advertisement The Celtics announced that Kyrie Irving will miss the remainder of the regular season and the playoffs following surgery on his left knee. Irving will now undergo an additional surgery to remove two screws that were inserted in his patella tendon after he injured his knee in the 2015 Finals. He’s expected to miss the next 4-5 months.#NEBHInjuryReport Kyrie Irving will undergo a procedure this Saturday to remove two screws implanted in his patella from an injury suffered during the 2015 NBA Finals. He is expected to make a full recovery in 4-5 months. https://t.co/WKQfPlUZ0u— Boston Celtics (@celtics) April 5, 2018 The news is devastating for Celtics fans who were hoping for Irving to return and make a Finals run. Colin’s takeaway is that Irving is clearly an injury prone player who wore down in his first season without LeBron to lean on.Kyrie was hurt at Duke. Hurt before LeBron. Hurt during the 2015 Finals with LeBron. And he’s hurt now. Some guys just get hurt. Irving is one of them. It’s not what people want to hear, but sometimes the truth hurts.Watch Colin’s reaction to the news:“My first takeaway is Kyrie is an injury-prone player. What Can VoIP Do

first_img What Can VoIP Do?Many businesses make the jump to VoIP for the savings, then fail to take full advantage of the enhanced functions these increasingly versatile platforms offer. Here’s a look at four VoIP features that can help boost productivity and make a small company boom.Unified Messaging Unified messaging means one-stop access to voice mail and e-mail: E-mails can be translated to voice messages, and voice messages can be turned into e-mails. It also allows users to setreceipt priorities-so messages from your investors automatically go to the top of the pile.Conferencing VoIP systems can take the traditional audio conference to the next level, injecting collaboration capabilities so participants can exchange files, sync calendars and (given the right broadband connection) communicate via video.Find Me/Follow Me This is the “anywhere, anytime” part of VoIP: a single-number forwarding function that lets callers find your employees whether they’re at their desks, in a hotel, working from home or on a job site.Auto Attendant This feature answers incoming calls, lets you play music or prerecorded messages to callers on hold and supports a voice-mail tree that can route calls by employee. In other words, it can make your small shop appear much bigger to your customers or clients. –J.M.Buying Better BroadbandDeciding on the best broadband connection for your business involves a lot more than just comparing costs. Here are some factors to weigh–and some things to watch out for.Speed Make sure you read the fine print on both download and upload speeds, particularly if your business exports large files to clients. Look for symmetrical or bidirectional broadband offerings.Expandability Does the package you’re considering support the expected growth of your business? Consider support for functions like WAN and WLAN–not to mention the OS you may be using.Security Nearly every business broadband package on the market will offer enhanced levels of security, such as anti-virus and spyware protection. Also look for extras like firewall and online backup.Support If the network–or your connection to it–goes down for whatever reason, you’ll want immediate support. Check for a priority 24-hour helpline, guaranteed repairs within a set period of time and service-level guarantees.Price As with any service, what you pay is critical. Also consider the length of any contract you ink, and beware of introductory rates that skyrocket after an initial honeymoon period. 2 min read June 11, 2009 This story appears in the July 2009 issue of Entrepreneur. An Elegant Desk Option for iPhones

first_img Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. December 21, 2010 This story appears in the January 2011 issue of . Subscribe » Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals In this era of mobility, instant messaging and free online video chat, the old office desk phone is fast becoming a relic. So if you’re going to have one, at least go for one with modern form and function. The Moshi Moshi 04i ($180) fits both bills. This multipurpose communicator from Native Union is almost absurdly elegant and adds all the functionality of a desk phone to your iPhone. (You can even cradle the receiver between your shoulder and ear, if that’s your thing.)Equipped with Bluetooth 2.1, the 04i can connect as many as two devices at once–your iPhone, plus, say, your laptop for VoIP calls–and serve as a hands-free conference call option for either. It is an iPhone charging dock, too. And Native Union, based in Hong Kong, also injected full-on speakers so that the unit can double as a portable sound system. Designed by British product and furniture designer Michael Young, the 04i has a brushed aluminum look that oozes style. Audio quality is serviceable, though Bang & Olufsen it is not.The clear upside for business users is not having to press your iPhone against your face, along with increased voice clarity for conference calls. Plus, cranking up the tunes on the 04i can make for a nice end to a long day. 2 min read Register Now »last_img read more

first_imgOctober 6, 2015 2 min read This story originally appeared on Reuters Facebook Inc said it would launch a satellite in partnership with France’s Eutelsat Communications to bring Internet access to large parts of sub-Saharan Africa. The satellite, part of Facebook’s Internet.org platform to expand internet access mainly via mobile phones, is under construction and will be launched in 2016, the companies said on Monday. (on.fb.me/1JPiTZC)The satellite, called AMOS-6, will cover large parts of West, East and Southern Africa, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said in a Facebook post.”To connect people living in remote regions, traditional connectivity infrastructure is often difficult and inefficient, so we need to invent new technologies,” Zuckerberg said. The Internet.org platform offers free access to pared-down web services, focused on job listings, agricultural information, healthcare and education, as well as Facebook’s own social network and messaging services.Growth in the number of people with access to the Internet is slowing, and more than half the world’s population is still offline, the United Nations Broadband Commission said last month.Facebook has nearly 20 million users in major African markets Nigeria and Kenya, statistics released by it showed last month, with a majority using mobile devices to access their profiles. The company opened its first African office in Johannesburg in June.Tech news website The Information reported in June that Facebook had abandoned plans to build a satellite to provide Internet service to continents such as Africa. Journalists Allegedly Trespass at Teslas Gigafactory Site One Reportedly Slams Jeep Into

first_img Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. 3 min read Trespassing, and hurting someone in the process, is no way to score a scoop. Yet that’s what a pair of journalists allegedly did at Tesla Motors’ Gigafactory in Sparks, Nevada, last week.On the morning of Friday, Oct. 9, a photographer and another employee of the Reno Gazette-Journal reportedly climbed through a fence bearing “Private Property” signs at the massive site, according to a lengthy blog post about the incident published yesterday by Elon Musk’s electric car company. When confronted by a Tesla safety manager, the trespassers denied breaching Gigafactory grounds and refused to provide their names, though their workplace I.D. cards reportedly dangled from their pockets in plain view.  Journalists trespass, assault Tesla employees at the Gigafactory http://t.co/WnaGk6hNoV— Tesla Motors (@TeslaMotors) October 13, 2015Related: Elon Musk Is Not Impressed With AppleWhen a second safety manager arrived on scene, Tesla says the two journalists were notified that deputies from the local sheriff’s department were on the way. At this point, the trespassers hopped into Jeep owned by the Gazette-Journal. A Tesla employee was then reportedly knocked over, sustaining a blow to his hip and lacerations on his arms, when the driver of the Jeep reportedly reversed into him while he attempted to jot down the vehicle’s license plate number.A chase ensued and the incident erupted in violence again, Tesla claims, with the driver Jeep allegedly slamming the Jeep into an ATV carrying two Tesla safety managers. The driver then allegedly drove the vehicle into a safety manager who had dismounted the ATV, striking him in the abdomen.Once authorities arrived on scene, the newspaper photographer, identified as Jose Andrews Barron, 59, was arrested on two felony counts of assault with a deadly weapon and held at the local detention center. Bail was set at $30,000. Tesla says both journalists will be charged with trespassing.Related: Elon Musk’s Advice for Jack Dorsey: Don’t Run Two CompaniesFor its part, the Gazette-Journal says it is investigating the situation. The news outlet, in its own coverage of the clash, claims its vehicle was damaged in the altercation, saying that a rock was used to shatter the driver’s side window of the Jeep and that the driver’s-side seat belt was severed in half.Tesla claims this isn’t the first time Looky Lous have broken the law to get a glimpse of its $5 billion lithium-ion battery factory, slated to open in 2017. “We appreciate the interest in the Gigafactory, but the repeated acts of trespassing, including by those working for the RGJ, is illegal, dangerous and needs to stop,” the company’s blog post on the skirmish concludes. “In particular, we will not stand for assaults on our employees and are working with law enforcement to investigate this incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.”Related: Why Tesla’s Gigafactory Could Be Obsolete Before It Even Opens October 14, 2015center_img Register Now » Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goalslast_img read more

Report iPhone Catches Fire MidFlight

first_imgMarch 22, 2016 Free Webinar | Sept. 9: The Entrepreneur’s Playbook for Going Global Growing a business sometimes requires thinking outside the box. This story originally appeared on PCMag 2 min read Register Now » On the list of things you never want to happen when you’re flying on a plane, a fire is probably pretty high up.But that was the scary scene on a recent Alaska Airlines flight from Bellingham, Wash., to Hawaii, and the airborne blaze was reportedly caused by an Apple iPhone. According to Seattle’s KOMO News, the iPhone’s owner, Anna Crail, was watching a movie on the handset passing time en route to a spring break trip when “flames started shooting out of her iPhone 6.””When it started I thought we were going down, and I was like, ‘oh my God, there’s a fire on the plane,'” Crail told the news outlet. The flight was carrying 163 passengers, and traveling somewhere above the Pacific Ocean when the fire broke out. There’s no word as to what caused the phone to ignite.Fortunately crew members were able to quickly put out the blaze.”All of the sudden there was like 8-inch flames coming out of my phone,” Crail reportedly said. “And I flipped it off onto the ground and it got under someone’s seat, and the flames were just getting higher and a bunch of people stood up.”While smartphone fires are rare, this is not the first such incident. A Canadian teenager last year suffered third-degree burns after his charging iPhone caught on fire while he was sleeping. In that case, the teen’s family believes a third-party charger purchased at a local gas station was to blame.last_img read more

Windows Upgrade Error Codes Decrypted

first_imgWindows Upgrade Error Codes Decrypted by Martin Brinkmann on October 12, 2016 in Windows – 6 commentsSo you tried to upgrade your Windows machine to Windows 10 and it did not work. Got the cryptic error code 0x80070070 thrown at you, for instance when you check the Event Viewer, but have no idea what it means.A search on the Internet shows that other users experienced the same issue, but most of what is suggested is guesswork.Did you know that these error codes follow a specific pattern that you can easily decrypt? It is actually pretty easy provided that you know where to look for the information.Lets take 0x80070070 again and see where it takes us. The two important bits that you need to extract from the error code are the first number after the x, and the last four digits.Windows Upgrade Error Codes DecryptedThe first number indicates the error code type. An 8 means it is a Win32 error code, a C means it is an NTSTATUS value.Once you know that, you simply look it up either on the Win32 error code page in the case of a Win32 error, or on the NTSTATUS page instead.Since the example error code refers to a Win32 error code, you would look it up on the Win32 error code page. There you would find listed 0070 which indicates a disk space error. To sum it up:Check the first number after the 0x to find out whether it is a Win32 or NTSTATUS error.Consult the error code page that resulted from 1, and look up the last four digits on the page to find out what the error code means. The error type is listed on the page, and a description that is often more useful as it provides you with additional information. Not all error codes or descriptions are easy to understand though, and you may not know what you need to do to resolve it after identifying the error correctly. While error codes like 0003 path not found or 004 access denied may point you in the right direction, codes like 00D7 nesting not allowed or 00D1 the signal number is invalid may not.Still, knowing what an error code means can provide you with valuable information on where to look for help. Even if you cannot figure it out on your own, you may provide others with the additional details as they may have a fix for that issue.Obviously, this won’t help you if a patch or update is borked and needs updating by Microsoft first. In case you are wondering, the information come from a detailed article on Microsoft’s IT Pro website over on Technet that explains how to resolve Windows 10 Upgrade Errors. It is a good read and well worth a bookmark; while designed for Windows 10, it may prove useful for previous versions of Windows as well. There is a list of common errors, explanations, and mitigation instructions. This includes error codes 0xC1900101, and various 0x800xxxxx error codes which can be really useful especially when upgrading a system to Windows 10.In case you are interested in generic Windows Update error codes and their meaning, check out this resource page on the Microsoft website instead. Now You: How do you handle Windows update or upgrade errors?SummaryArticle NameWindows Upgrade Error Codes DecryptedDescriptionFind out how to decrypt Windows upgrade (and update) error codes when you run into them when you try to install updates.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more

Hide Chromes Disable developer mode extensions warning

first_imgHide Chrome’s Disable developer mode extensions warning by Martin Brinkmann on July 04, 2017 in Google Chrome – 25 commentsThe warning “Disable developer mode extensions” is displayed in Chrome when you install non Chrome Web Store extensions in the browser. This warning is displayed on each start of the browser, and it stays on the screen until you hit one of the available buttons (disable or cancel).Google stated that it displays the warning because of malware that force-installed extensions to Chrome. If you are a developer of Chrome extensions, or downloaded an extension from a reliable source, you probably want to do away with the warning as it can be quite annoying after some time.Probably the easiest option is to use Chrome Canary. Unlike Chrome Stable, Canary does not display warnings for extensions installed from outside the Chrome Web Store. I did not try the Developer Edition of Chrome to find out if it omits the warning as well.Google Chrome itself comes without any options to suppress the warning message about installed developer mode extensions. Windows, Linux and Mac administrators may use policies however to hide the warning so that it does not show up.  Note that this works only on Professional or Enterprise versions on Windows, as Home versions don’t come with the Group Policy Editor.Disable developer mode extensions warning in ChromeThe very first thing you need to do is download the latest policy templates from the Google Support website. The following instructions are for Chrome installations on Windows. Instructions for the other operating systems similar. The policy file is distributed as a zip archive that you need to extract.Once you have done so, move the file policy_templates\windows\admx\chrome.admx to c:\windows\policydefinitions, and the file policy_templates\windows\admx\[yourlanguage]\chrome.adml to c:\windows\policydefinitions\[yourlanguage]\chrome.admlOpen chrome://extensions in the Chrome web browser afterwards, and locate the extension or extensions that you have installed from a source that is not the Chrome Web Store.Copy the ID of the first to the clipboard.Open the Group Policy Editor on Windows: tap on the Windows-key, type gpedit.msc, and hit the Enter-key. The Chrome policies should be loaded automatically.Go to User Configuration > ADministrative Templates > Administrative Templates > Google Chrome > Extensions.Double-click on the “Configure extension installation whitelist” policy.Set the policy to enabled.Click on the show button.Add the IDs of any non-Chrome Web Store extension to the listing.Click ok in the end.Restart the Chrome browser.Second option: patching chrome.dllAnother option is highlighted on the Stackoverflow forum. It requires patching the chrome.dll file.Word of warning: Since the script that is used for that patches a file that Chrome requires for running, it is recommended that you create backups before you continue. It may also be easier to just use Chrome Canary instead of stable Chrome. You find the script on this page on Stackoverflow. Copy all of it and put it in a plain text file that you create anew. Rename the plain text file so that it has a .bat extension afterwards. You find the chrome.dll file in the application folder. On Windows, this can be C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\[ChromeVersion] or C:\Program Files\Google\Chrome\Application\[ChromeVersion]You have two options now: you can run the batch file so that it patches all chrome.dll files it finds, or drag and drop a chrome.dll file onto the batch file icon to have it processed only. I suggested you do the latter after verifying again that you have created a backup of the chrome.dll file. The batch file patches chrome.dll to suppress the “disable developer mode extensions” warning in the web browser.SourcesGoogle Chrome Help ForumStackoverflowNow You: Have another tip on dealing with the popup?SummaryArticle NameHide Chrome’s Disable developer mode extensions warningDescriptionThe guide describes three methods to suppress the “disable developer mode extensions” warning popup in Google Chrome for non-Store extensions.Author Martin BrinkmannPublisher Ghacks Technology NewsLogo Advertisementlast_img read more
