Researchers Suggest Quantum Dots as Media for Teleportation

Quantum teleportation performed with light from a quantum dot embedded in an LED Here, researchers focus on semiconductor quantum dots containing as few as a thousand atoms of a semiconducting element, such as silicon, and having diameters as small as one nanometer. They are often referred to as “artificial atoms” because their behavior can be quite similar to a single atom. For example, a semiconductor quantum dot’s electrons can be confined in a way similar to how a single atom’s electrons are bound. Therefore, a quantum dot can be described by a single quantum state, despite consisting of hundreds or thousands of atoms.Researchers Leong Chuan Kwek and K.W. Choo of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore modeled a teleportation system consisting of two quantum dots. They first investigated how the fidelity of the teleportation process would be affected by quantum “entanglement” – when two or more quantum states have to be described with reference to each other, even when spatially separated. The model revealed that the entanglement of the dots is proportional to the fidelity: as one increases, the other increases. Kwek and Choo then developed general equations that would yield a suitable magnetic field, dot-to-dot distance, and temperature (which would all depend on the size of the dots and other variables) such that the fidelity of the system would be better than the average fidelity of non-quantum communications.“Our work provides some preliminary estimates on the way self-assembled quantum dots might be fabricated in terms of inter-dot distances for experiments at room temperature,” Kwek told PhysOrg.com.He and Choo also studied how the system would handle “decoherence,” the often unavoidable interaction of a quantum system with its environment, which compromises the transfer process. Decoherence is one major issue facing quantum computing. Two decoherence models show, however, that the quantum-dot system could still function under a moderate amount of decoherence.Finally, the researchers used the model to study a quantum-state transfer or swapping of states between two quantum dots, an ability necessary for quantum information processing. They determined that a “perfect” transfer is possible using a quantum-dot teleportation system, meaning that the transferred quantum state is exactly the same as the initial quantum state of the first dot.Citation: K.W. NHTSA looking to implement new noise enhancement rules for electric vehicles

The first, conducted in 2008 by Lawrence Rosenblum, a University of California perceptual psychologist, showed that subjects wearing blindfolds were able to hear a Honda Accord with a gas engine approaching from as far away as 36 feet, but were only able to hear a Toyota Prius (hybrid) when it drew as near as 11 feet.In the other study, done by the NHTSA itself, research indicated that there was a higher percentage rate for electric vehicles running into pedestrians, than gas powered models.And while some may debate the accuracy of the research (the NHTSA study used data from just 12 states and only for one year) or the degree to which electric vehicles actually pose a risk, the bottom line, is that new regulations are very likely going to be implemented, a draft standard will be issued in 2012, with the new rules going into effect in 2015. Thus, the issue now is just what sort of “noise” will the car manufacturers be required to add. Some, such as the Nissan Leaf, already make a sort of whoosh sound, and Ford is opting for a crowd sourced option that will hopefully come up with a sound that the majority of electric vehicle owners won’t hate. All this might be moot however if the NHTSA picks a noise on its own. Also an issue is whether such cars would be required to make the noise all the time, or just during slow driving when it more likely matters. They could also decide to add different noises for different activities, such as when a vehicle is moving in reverse or turning, a likely possibility since the legislation spurring them to action in the first place also applies to light and low-speed vehicles, motorcycles, buses, and heavy-duty trucks. Researchers refute idea that Neanderthals drove mammoths over cliff in Jersey

first_img Today, Jersey is a British Crown dependency—an island off the coast of Normandy. But 200,000 years ago, ocean levels were lower—so low that parts of the site, now known as LaCotte de St Brelade were above the water line. To get a better handle on how the mass of bones wound up at the sight, the researchers obtained a survey of the seabed as it stretches away from the cliff. In analyzing the terrain, the researchers noted that in order for mammoths or other beasts to be driven over the cliff, they would have first had to have been driven down into a dip, then back up again before arriving at the edge of the cliff—the terrain itself would have been very rocky as well, suggesting that a herd of mammoths would have dispersed long before reaching the cliff, and thus could not have all plunged to their deaths together.The researchers also noted that some of the excavated bones near the bottom of the pile showed signs of being burnt, which suggests the bones were used by the Neanderthals after death. The researchers contend that rather than driving the mammoths over the cliff en masse, they instead hunted them individually and carried their bones to the site where they were found—to eat the meat off them, and to use the bones for burning or other purposes. Many other Neanderthal artifacts have been found at the site, suggesting it’s a place where they lived on and off for many years, before finally moving away as the climate grew too cold for them. Credit: Nature (2014) doi:10.1038/nature13991 Scientists have been studying plants for quite some time trying to understand how photosynthesis works, and while they have made a great deal of progress, there are still some parts that aren’t completely understood, one of those is Photosystem II, the initial reaction in photosynthesis, where a plant uses energy from light to split water molecules into oxygen and hydrogen atoms. The problem lies in catching the plant mechanism in action and taking a picture of it. Scientists have used lasers in the past, but that causes damage to the plant parts being studied. More recently, X-ray free electron lasers (FELs) have been developed that allow for a technique called serial femtosecond crystallography—where a sample is exposed to a small X-ray pulse, over and over, resulting in the creation of an image that can be used for study. But, it still doesn’t allow for the high resolution (because of diffraction issues) scientists really want. In this new effort, the researchers have taken the FELs approach a step further and in so doing have come up with a way to create the high resolution images scientists have been hoping for.The team brought with them expertise in dehydration techniques that allow for slow, controlled large crystal growth—adding such a process to the FELs approach allowed for creating very high resolution images of Photosystem II (in its dark resting state) for the first time. Schlichting notes that because the team used large crystals, the technique also allows for using more than one diffraction pattern by moving the sample around, thus giving researchers more views.In addition to helping to learn more about how plants use the sun’s energy to perform photosynthesis, scientists may be able to use the new technique to develop better man-made versions of the OEC to hopefully offer a new type of solar cell that will finally get us off burning fossil fuels. The initial reaction of photosynthesis takes place in photosystem II (PSII), a 700-kilodalton homodimeric membrane protein complex that catalyses photo-oxidation of water into dioxygen through an S-state cycle of the oxygen evolving complex (OEC). The structure of PSII has been solved by X-ray diffraction (XRD) at 1.9 ångström resolution, which revealed that the OEC is a Mn4CaO5-cluster coordinated by a well defined protein environment1. However, extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) studies showed that the manganese cations in the OEC are easily reduced by X-ray irradiation2, and slight differences were found in the Mn–Mn distances determined by XRD1, EXAFS and theoretical studies. Here we report a ‘radiation-damage-free’ structure of PSII from Thermosynechococcus vulcanus in the S1 state at a resolution of 1.95 ångströms using femtosecond X-ray pulses of the SPring-8 ångström compact free-electron laser (SACLA) and hundreds of large, highly isomorphous PSII crystals. Compared with the structure from XRD, the OEC in the X-ray free electron laser structure has Mn–Mn distances that are shorter by 0.1–0.2 ångströms. The valences of each manganese atom were tentatively assigned as Mn1D(III), Mn2C(IV), Mn3B(IV) and Mn4A(III), based on the average Mn–ligand distances and analysis of the Jahn–Teller axis on Mn(III). One of the oxo-bridged oxygens, O5, has significantly longer distances to Mn than do the other oxo-oxygen atoms, suggesting that O5 is a hydroxide ion instead of a normal oxygen dianion and therefore may serve as one of the substrate oxygen atoms. Domesticated wild dog mothers found unwilling to share meat with offspring

In their paper published in Royal Society Open Science, the team describes experiments they carried out with semi-feral dogs, what they learned and why they believe their experiments offer evidence that suggests that dog domestication was more likely related to dog ancestors joining human civilizations than humans adopting wild puppies. As the researchers note, very little research has been conducted on these street dogs, thus very little is known about their history or habits. After observing a mother with older pups refusing to share a bit of meat with her offspring, the researchers set up some experiments to learn if it was a common behavior or a onetime situation.The experiments consisted of offering food to a mother who still had pups traveling with her, but whose pups were all old enough to have been weaned. In the first experiment, the researchers tossed biscuits to 15 mother/litter groups and observed how they behaved, noting particularly how willing the mother was to share with her offspring. In the second set of experiments, they tossed pieces of raw chicken to 16 different mother/litter groups and once again watched to see how they behaved.In studying their data, the researchers found that during the biscuit experiments, the mothers were generally willing to share with their offspring—they did so freely approximately 75 percent of the time. When meat was doled out, however, things changed dramatically, there were conflicts approximately 80 percent of the time, straight away.Anyone who has ever owned a dog knows that meat is of particular importance to them, while they are able to digest carbohydrates, they still crave the protein in meat, as the mothers in the experiments in India showed. We fit the mothers’ response from experimental data to the model and show that the mothers choose a selfish strategy, which can in turn ensure higher lifetime reproductive success, while depriving the current litter access to better resources. These results have interesting implications for understanding the social dynamics of the dogs, and the emergence of facultative sociality in a species that evolved from strongly social ancestors. We speculate that the tendency of increased conflict in resource-rich conditions might have driven the process of domestication in the ancestors of dogs which defected from their groups in favour of richer resources around human settlements.last_img read more

Deceptively simple in appearance and invoking flavour of folk painting the Haripura Posters are amalgamation of the decorative and the calligraphic art with a rare ingenuity as well as personal insignia. “At the Venice Biennale we will display them as independent works of art but history says they were done in order to decorate a temporary township built for the annual session of the Indian National Congress in the remote village of Haripura in early 1938,” adds Gadanayak. According to historical notes by art historian R Siva Kumar, the township was built of local materials and in harmony with the rural surroundings. The decorations were conceived, both in style and idiom, following the same aesthetics and were designed to complement the temporary structures. Sivakumar wrote in an essay that they have to be imagined in their original context as part of a broader design to be fully appreciated. The posters also evoke Gandhian ethics and creativity.
