Sanchez went the distance to earn the win in the second game of Friday’s doubleheader sweep of McNeese, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk. The freshman hurler one-upped herself on Saturday, coming on in relief with the Bears trailing 5-0 with no outs in the second inning. Sanchez worked the final 8.0 innings of the game, scattering 13 hits and allowing just one run to keep the Cowgirls close enough for Central Arkansas to rally for the 7-6 win in extras. She finished the week with a 0.93 ERA. Morris and Sanchez led a UCA (10-9, 3-0 SLC) squad that swept defending Southland champions, McNeese (16-8, 0-3 SLC), to begin conference play this weekend. The Bears’ sweep is the first suffered by the Cowgirls in conference action since 2011. Morris posted a .545 batting average while Sanchez picked up two wins in the circle. This is the second consecutive hitting award for the Bears and third overall this campaign. Sanchez earns the Bears their first pitching honor of the season. The junior second baseman opened the series with a 3-for-3 performance that included a double and three RBIs, but it was in Saturday’s nine-inning thriller that the product of Grove, Okla., made her presence known. With the Bears trailing 5-0 in the fourth inning, Morris put her squad on the board with an RBI fielder’s choice before cutting the lead to 5-3 with a two-run homer in the sixth inning. Morris came to plate in the seventh with two outs and UCA trailing 5-4 and planted a double a foot inside the right-field line. A misplay on the bounce allowed the tying run to score and send the game to extras. After the Cowgirls retook the lead in the top of the ninth, Morris ripped a single through the right side to knot things up at six apiece in the eventual 7-6 win for UCA.
